Chicken pox in adult advice

Hiya :)
Both of my children have chicken pox and I’m not immune to it as I had a blood test done a few years ago and it said I have no immunity . Am I definitely going to get it ? Has anybody had it as an adult before ?
Is it as awful as I’m reading online :( do they definitely leave scars ? Argh I’m stressing.

I knew the kids would inevitably get it by I guess it’s part of being a child . I wish I had it before or was immune but am
Worrying about how ‘serious’ I’m seeing it is in an adult ... any advice ? X thanks

I got chicken pox at 34.

For three weeks prior to the spots appearing I felt

  • tired easily
  • was pissed after one glass of wine
  • and shitfaced after two
  • my allergies went haywire and I had to stay away from then BFs house due to her having a cat

That was it. The night before the bumps appeared I felt like I’d been hit across the back of the head by an iron bar.

When the spots appeared the GP on call gave a prescription for antibiotics and told me to flash my flesh in the April sun as much as possible as Vitamin D is the enemy of scarring.

I was fine. Week off work, antibiotics I could drink on, nearly nude sunbathing in the garden, it was a nice enforced break for me, even if I did look like spotty from Superted.

First time I’d ever sent nude selfies too (to my ghoulishly fascinated female friends as for some reason I had REALLY spotty boobs).

Ps spots were not itchy. Only lasting scar is on my forehead, a tiny crater from where I caught a drying pustule on a dress ring.

Classy.

My brother has had chicken pox twice as an adult- apparently something like 13% of people can contract it again. As he was a paramedic he had to have time off necause he was infectious but he just had a few spots and nothing more. It can however get serious. You can get an inoculation for chicken pox but if your kids already have it that may not help at this stage. Best to just wait and see.

My sister had no immunity and has had it multiple times as an adult despite having it twice as a child.
She generally feels run down like with most viral things and the spots are usually fairly mind and don't last too long.

She worked in a care home until recently so had to take time off but has now changed jobs.
Luckily all the current nieces and nephews have had it so it's only friends kids that can infection her again.

If you do get chickenpox, please keep an eye on symptoms. DH became seriously ill from chickenpox pneumonia years ago when he was in his mid 30's. Most adults will be fine but it can be more serious in adults.

You need to get a course of anti virals within 24 hours of any symptoms so the impact is reduced.

Catching it from your children can make it more severe, believe me. I found out the hard way and was only told about that too late. I was very ill and covered in every imaginable place! Amazingly I only have a couple of scars...I thought I'd have to go out after dark for the rest of my life when I looked in the mirror Grin

The very word chickenpox still makes me shudder.

My first pock appeared when I went into labour with DD! That was despite having an immunoglobulin injection when DS first got chicken pox. If you do get them, push for an antiviral. I stopped getting more crops of pox almost immediately after.

Do adults tend to get more spots than kids ? Still not showing signs yet but I am 100 percent not immune as had my immunity checked when pregnant two years ago. Both of my children are now at the ‘scabby’ stage
