Hi all,
What's the best thing to help my ds (8 weeks, 3 days) with a cold?

I have been using some infant nasal drops on our 8week old who has a snuffly nose.
I think you can buy some plug in stuff to help decongest them, but not used it myself so not sure of the age recommendation.

Sit in a steamy bathroom. Hold upright to sleep/lift head end of whatever he sleeps in. Karvol drops. Vicks on the soles of his feet.

Saline spray. Life saver for me 8 wk old. Bring them in the bathr
bathroom while you have a hot sho
shower.

Ok thanks all, is calpol a no no? I think maybe he's still a bit young?

Does he seem to be in pain?

IHateToCashew · 09/05/2018 19:57

As horrific as it sounds ... saline drops and an electric snot sucker. It hoovers out the nose in a way that the bulb suckers can't.

We also bought a humidifier for the bedroom which helped.

Have you got DC's cot titled so they aren't flat?

starlightmeteorite · 09/05/2018 19:58

He's too young for the plug ins.

Dc2 had a real bad cold pretty much permanently from 5 days old to about 12 months as Dc1 brought home every bug going from nursery. It was very worrying. I agree above with lifting the head end of the moses basket/crib slightly although obviously not by very much unless you are sitting watching. Also keep an eye on temp, skin colour, breathing, and GP straight away if you are worried. Most GPs aim to see very young babies same day.

Sound gross but the snot sucker from the chemist for clearing nose can help. In case you are wondering there is no way the snot can get in your mouth when you suck! Different tube.

He's sort of crying on and off, he also has reflux so it's a combination of the two

Humidifier works really well, in the bedrooom at night, has always helped with my three DC

Camelsinthegobi · 09/05/2018 20:00

Humidity - bowl of warm water/wet towels hanging in the bedroom. Incline the mattress of the cot. Lots of cuddles and take it in turns to sleep!

IHateToCashew · 09/05/2018 20:06

Oh. Also, Sainsbury's do their own version of this olbas oil type stuff. It's suitable from birth and you put a few drops in boiling ease and stick it under the cot. That seemed to help too.

Hi, if you're breastfeeding (no judgement if not!!), then milk in the nostrils - one at a time - helps.
He hope he gets better soon!

Thank you everyone!
Have just got the nasal drops, will give that a go when he wakes back up Smile
