6 month old dropping head - seizures??

My 6 month old DD is dropping her head as if her neck muscles get weak whilst on her tummy or even when I hold her sitting up on my lap. She then recovers very quickly. She has been doing that for a few months but I always put it down to her not liking tummy time and her neck muscles not being strong enough as a result. However now she likes to roll over on her tummy and spends a significant amount of time exercising her neck muscles but things are not improving. She keeps bumping her head and I’m keeping her play mat padded at all times. I’m very worried.

I did see a paediatrician a month ago but she said she seemed very strong when she pulled her but her arms and that ‘she’ll catch up’. I’m worried it might be seizures. She seems to develop very well otherwise, is very alert and seems to hit all other milestones.

Anyone has had a similar experience?

Totally normal, it's them taking a break from using those muscles every few minutes. Try and lie on your tummy on the floor, have your arms back the way a baby would and see how long you can hold your head up off the ground before you need to put your head down for a rest. I'm being genuine BTW xx

Nogodsnomasters...I agree with what you are saying but she does the head drop when I hold her upright as well or when she is in her high chair. Her head just falls all of the sudden as if her neck muscles loose strength for a few secs. It’s quite scary sometimes and I don’t see other babies doing it.

Can you film her doing it? Film her on your phone a couple of time & then show it to the Dr. Might help put your mind at rest either way

Nogodsnomasters · 08/05/2018 23:44

Oh sorry I didn't see you saying it happens in her high chair too etc, then that is not normal in that position. As pp suggested I would definitely try and film it (though I know that's hard when it's sporadic and kids are hard to predict) but if you can get a video then take it to the gp xx

Definitely video the head drops. There's a Very rare type of epilepsy called Infantile Spasms (and hard to tell from your description whether it could be a possibility) which you would be able to find videos online to compare. Probably not this but often missed by medical professionals because of rarity. Hope it's something more innocent.

Is it anything like this? Has there been any regression? Don't let them fob you off
DaisyDreaming · 18/05/2018 02:39

My friends daughter started doing the same, she videoed it and I wouldn’t of noticed really or just thought she was doing it. They were seizures though and her mum instinct was right. The little girl still has the occasionally (but a lot less often) and is on no medication

Onceuponatimethen · 18/05/2018 03:39

You could google atonic seizures which are (I think rare) form of epilepsy

Not an hcp so no clue but df was told to try to film her child having one to show dr

Would push to see a neurologist and ask for an eeg

@firsttimemummy17 So sorry to resurrect such an old thread but my baby is doing this too. I have taken him to hospital and they don’t think it’s seizures but I’m so worried - any update on your little one?

Why don't they think seizures? Have they ruled out infantile spasms?

lusciousmix · 17/02/2023 06:29

@paradyning obviously infantile spasms is what I’m fearing but he has had 2 EEGs now and nothing wrong apparently

Sae178 · 12/04/2023 09:22

@firsttimemummy17 any update on your little one? My lo has started doing the same

Sae178 · 12/04/2023 09:38

@lusciousmix is there any update on your lo? Mine has started doing similar

lusciousmix · 12/04/2023 13:23

Not real update @Sae178 - they don’t know why he’s doing it but as he did the movements during the EEG and it didn’t show any concerning brain activity they said it’s nothing to be concerned about and he’ll probably grow out of it

Sae178 · 12/04/2023 14:40

OK thanks for coming back to me. I'm glad the EEG was all ok for him.

Did they suggest an mri too or just doing EEG?

My lo just randomly started doing it one day, do other signs or anything else going on. So strange. Do you have a video I'd your lo doing it?

Sae178 · 12/04/2023 14:42

Sorry another question, how often does he do it? Guessing there are no signs of it stopping yet?

Same with my baby…. How is your baby now?

Anuja22 · 24/07/2023 06:48

Please answer how is your baby now?

Ask1411 · 07/02/2025 20:12

Hi,
My baby just started doing this too. Any one can give any update/ advise ?! How are your babies ?! Thanks 🙏

lusciousmix · 10/02/2025 16:13

Sorry this is such an old thread but I seem to get messages about it still so here is my update:

Hi there, sorry I am not active on here so didn’t spot this message before.
Sorry you’re going through this - it’s so scary! And it absolutely contributed to post partum depression for me.
So what happened was I ended up getting 2 EEGs done and they couldn’t find an issue and said it wasn’t seizures and as he was continuing to develop well it clearly wasn’t causing problems like repeat seizures would. They also tested his blood in case it was a deficiency of some kind and while borderline low on some (I started giving him a multivitamin)
I don’t regret getting him checked out because I was convinced something was wrong and honestly when I showed the videos it’s not like anyone said “you’re mad there’s nothing wrong”. It did look weird to doctors!
I never got a real answer as to why it happened. I did lots of research and spoke to lots of doctors. They said it was probably one of the following - silent reflux causing him to have little jolts of discomfort, teething pain causing pressure in his ears, or a behavioural thing somewhat like a “tic” in Tourette’s but that he would grow out off.
I’m pleased to say he did grow out of it, probably by about 9 months when he was way more mobile and in control of his body. However I will say he continues to be a very high energy and buzzy/tense kind of child so maybe it’s something to do with his brain/personality rather than being a disorder as such.
Any specific questions please ask!
