Stomach bug- warning TMI

DD has been suffering with a stomach bug since Friday. She is mainly suffering with explosive diarrhoea which stinks, yellow in colour and is very loose. No vomiting at all but she did have a temp of 39 on Sat. Temp has come down but she is still suffering with diarrhoea and is complaining that she has a ‘tickle in her tummy’. She is 4 but says it feels like something is in her tummy.
She is off her food and just wants to lie and watch television. I’m managing to get lots of water in her so she is well hydrated.

Just wondering how long to expect diarrhoea to go in for? And starting to wonder if it’s E. coli or samonella?

I would call the GP in the morning. If she begins to vomit, the temp comes back or any other symptoms appear I'd call 111. Poor thing must be exhausted.

Have you tried using cooled boiled water as opposed to tap water? I found that always helped mine when they were little.

If she's keeping water down, I wouldn't worry too much but I'd contact your GP for some advice tomorrow if she's still got diahorrea.

Yellow smelly explosions can sometimes be c-diff. www.nhs.uk/conditions/c-difficile/. Has she had antibiotics recently?

About a week in my experience, sometimes 10 days in small children IME, esp if it's Noro.

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Staying hydrated is key. Appetite will return once she perks up a bit.

Yes she actually had antibiotics about 3 weeks ago- a ten day course of penicillin.
I’ve always given her a powder prebiotic though so assumed the antibiotics wouldn’t have affected her as much as others.

She’s wiped out- I always get so worried when she’s lethargic as she usually is always on the go.

Hoping the diarrhoea settles down soon as anything she eats comes straight back out and conscious that will be making her exhausted too.

I'd try and see your GP then to be on the safe side.

Poor love, she must feel rotten. Try simple foods like porridge made with water, or plain baked potato. Perhaps lay off dairy until she's feeling better.

Ds had a similar bug, vomiting rather than diarrhoea. It lasted for a full week & he barely moved from the sofa. High temp & cough too.

He was exhausted ! Started to liven up after I pushed him to eat.

With diarrhoea I also starve for 24-48 hrs so as not to fuel the bacteria. Then eat plain food.

Husband swears by flat coke (full calorie) sipped slowly. We have travelled widely & it has always worked. Wink

I hope she feels better soon. Smile

Thanks all.

Managed to get her to have a baked potato and some dry Cheerios tonight so that’s a start. Just hoping it starts to ease off soon as her bum is red raw too!
