Lump on neck!! Worried

Could anyone shine any light on this as I'm panicking a little.

My D'S is 22 months and has a lump on his neck since about last October time. We took his to the docs and they said gland because of possible cold/teething. They said come back in 3/4 weeks if It had not gone done. It had not so we went back. Again told gland due to the same thing.

Tried putting it to the back of my mind and I hadn't seen or felt it. Although his dad did mention a couple of times and I just reminded him it must be teething or cold. Anyway this morning I've seen my DS playing and I can see the lump.

Stupidly i googled and I shouldn't have. Because Hodgkin lymphoma (paediatric) came up! Now it says it's rare but some symptoms include itching which he is all the time but then he has eczema? Night sweats he sometimes gets even in the winter.

What do others Think? It's saturday so obviously the doctors are closed but you think the walk in centre will see him???

Don’t panic! Perils of doctor Google.

My DS had the same from a baby. It would go up and down, but looked very big. Around age three it seemed to be there all the time and after a series of viruses with temp and sweating etc. I got worried. I mentioned all symptoms and although the GP felt it and was sure it was fine, he ordered a blood test to rule out lymphoma or anything worrying.

It was totally clear. The lump is still there quite often and is a visible lymph gland.

Book a GP appointment for Monday and mention all the symptoms you are concerned about. By far the most likely explanation is it’s normal, but get him a blood test to set your mind at rest.

I agree with the poster above. GP and see your GP.

Blood cancers are rare, so don’t catastrophise. Chances are it’ll be something or nothing. But tell your GP you are worried, and ask if a full blood count can be done.

(GP should be receptive to this. There’s recently been a push on reminding HCPs about early symptoms of blood cancer, which is possibly why it’s a higher ‘hit’ on google. It remains a rare condition, though)

See your GP. But don't panic.

Things that give kids this age those lumps:

Colds
Tonsillitis
Ear infections
Glue ear
Scalp eczema
Nits
Glandular fever
EBV (different virus from glandular fever, but similar effects)

The scary stuff is way at the bottom of the list. We get referred scores of kids a year for glands that have been there for over 6 months. I don't think I've ever seen one, in a generally pretty well kid, who turned out to be anything to worry about.

See your GP, but step away from google.

Please don’t panic, my son had this and we were referred after it hadn’t gone down over almost a year. It was nothing, just a swollen gland. He has had it for nearly three years now and it’s much more prominent when he’s run down which I suppose means it’s doing it’s job.

Luckymummy22 · 05/05/2018 22:25

Definitely see your Gp as you can never be too careful.
BUT my kids always have raised lymph nodes - my son especially.
We’ve never actually questioned with it as he is prone to colds etc.
My DH did take my eldest once & got told they can be raised for a long time after a virus

Hey same here. My son is 4 this year and has a swollen node on one side and has done for a year now. I freaked out. It's more prominent when he is poorly but always there.

GoodStuffAnnie · 07/05/2018 07:52

I had this and it was cystic hygromas. Part of lymphatic system. Totally fine. 2 operations. I still have them. Benign odd lumps.
