Plus size school uniform

Not sure where best to post.
DC2 will start secondary school in Sept. I cannot find suitable school trousers as he is obese.
He has got through primary school by wearing shorts (Next age 13, elasticated waist, charcoal grey and stretchy, like short joggers.)
I've tried the plus sizes for children on the high street but they are not big enough. ( I have been in touch with some retailers because, for example M&S's plus sizes are in some cases less than one inch bigger on the waist than their normal size.) Have also tried several brands from specialist shop Sturdy Kids but, despite sending a FORTUNE on postage and returns, nothing is right. I'd really just like black school trousers with an elasticated waist...)
Any ideas of where else I could try please?
(Not looking for advice on diet or lifestyle thanks, we are on NHS diet and exercise programme)

What a horribly unhelpful comment yummy and what a disgusting person you must be.

GottaFindTchange · 04/05/2018 09:29

Don't worry Mavis.
Yummy's comment is meaningless and irrelevant. Sounds like semi-literate attempt at provocation!

Try Zeco full-elastic pull up trouser. Very roomy and generous on the waist so should fit your boy fine. Good quality fabric as well and goes up to 15/16 years (but 15/16 years are hard to find).

Hopefully you have some luck with those Smile.

Thanks for taking the time to post Daddy- have actually tried these. They sell them on the Sturdy Kids website, even though they are standard sizes not plus sizes.
Unfortunately, their largest size (age 13-14, 24"+ waist) only just fitted him a couple of months ago, so I can't imagine they'd still fit come September.
That is exactly the kind of thing I want though- just in plus sizes!

@IceSwan - thankyou for your genius idea of looking at ladies' trousers. New Look black jeggings to the rescue - thick, stretchy, comfortable, just smart enough for school, esp if partially hidden under a blazer.
Seamstress quoted £180 plus fabric cost for 2 pairs of elasticated trousers,... so £15:99 from New Look much better.
Had to go for size 12. He's 5' 1"

Neolara · 12/06/2018 21:26

I think there is a rare condition linked to a lack (or too much) of a specific hormone that can make people obese. Once they are a given it artificially(or have it suppressed, I can't remember which) , apparently they become normal weight. The hormone could be leptin. I went to a talk by an obesity researcher a couple of years ago and they mentioned this condition..

Zoflorabore · 12/06/2018 21:35

This was my ds all of his school life op, how I hated uniforms!
He's now 15 and in year 10 and in February this year he started Slimming World as a
young member and so far has lost 3 stone!
He is thrilled as uniform is now too big.

He's still got a way to go as is a big lad and tall, over 6ft with size 14 shoes so is never going to be small but he wouldn't suit it anyway.

I started buying men's trousers in the end from Matalan £10 per pair, your ds will no doubt shoot up soon and will be fine with men's trousers in a short leg.
It's bloody hard isn't it? Lots of my friends have moaned about their skinny kids getting clothes to fit properly too though so I take that as a sign that it's not just bigger kids who have issues with clothes.

Very best of luck finding some trousers and to your ds with his weight loss journey Flowers

BarbaraWarpecker · 13/06/2018 06:51

Thanks @Zoflorabore and @Neolara . It's good to have helpful, supportive, encouraging comments.
Many comments on the other current thread about obese children call parents child abusers- such ignorance... and a giant lack of empathy...
DS is still on the NHS programme- 1 hour fun exercise while parents get to talk to dietician. Then one hour making and trying healthy foods and educating the kids. The emphasis is definitely on family healthy eating. No mention of weight loss. The hope is the kids will maintain their weight as they grow taller.
This was offered after the Yr6 weigh in and I'm so grateful for it....

BarbaraWarpecker · 13/06/2018 06:57

Ps @Zoflorabore size 14 feet...That must be difficult to buy shoes??? My DS is 10 and has size 8-same size as me- maybe heading for a 14...

LoniceraJaponica · 13/06/2018 07:05

I would double check how strict the school is about uniform. Some of the suggestions here to wear cargo trousers or jeggings would earn an isolation at DD's school.

I second the idea of ruling out a medical issue as well.

BarbaraWarpecker · 13/06/2018 07:37

DS1 is currently Yr 11 at the school DS2 will be starting at, so I'm very familiar with the uniform policy. The jeggings will be suitable. They are in smart deep black colour ( they are not leggings) and are NOT tight fitting on him at all. Since they are too long in the leg, they will need taking up which will involve snipping off the tightest few inches at the bottom of the leg, thus the hem is actually a decent circumference.

MissWimpyDimple · 13/06/2018 07:49

I'm sure you have been through this, but my cousin has a condition called PWS. It's chromosomal, in a similar way to Down Syndrome.

There are usually other symptoms though so it may be a non starter. Worth a look though?

Zoflorabore · 13/06/2018 07:52

Im a size 8 too op, ds has followed a pattern from about 8 years old of being the same age as shoe size, it was scary at one point as I had visions of him with canoes for feet Smile

Since turning 15 in March he is still comfortably in a size 14 thank god, I think his feet are done growing.
It certainly is hard getting shoes and trainers especially but Nike do go up to a size 14.

I think that sounds great what your ds is doing, exercise and getting to try new foods, it will definitely help.

Since starting SW, my ds has found so many new foods that he loves, mushrooms/peppers being a favourite.

I think it's disgusting that parents have been called abusers on the other thread, I haven't read it and don't think I want to.

It's hard enough having a bigger child without reading things like that.
Says more about them than us doesn't it?!

Hope this thread helps xx

LoniceraJaponica · 13/06/2018 08:33

"I think it's disgusting that parents have been called abusers on the other thread,"

Sadly, in some cases, it is probably true. Clearly not in the OP's case and the posters who have replied on this thread.

I live in South Yorkshire near a town not known for its affluence. It is an area with some of the highest levels of obesity in Britain. I expect most of it will be down to lack of money and education. Whenever I go into town I am struck by just how many overweight families there are, not just one overweight child in a family of slim people, but entire families.

Iceswan · 15/06/2018 18:37

@BarbaraWarpecker I'm so pleased! Hopefully he will be very comfortable and confident in them

ihearttc · 25/06/2018 18:24

DS1 wears the Zeco Sturdy fit trousers from school uniform 24/7. He has rather solid thighs from football and they are the only ones that fit comfortably. They definitely go bigger than 13-14 though.

adviceonthepox · 25/06/2018 19:24

I struggled getting trousers for my son this year we ended up buying men's trousers 32" waist 29" length. I was very surprised that they fit really well and I didn't have to alter them at all. He was 11 going into year 7 and all the other school trousers were just too narrow on the waist and didn't have any bum space. A lot of the parents found they had the same problem and were able to buy men's with some needing to have them shortened slightly.

BarbaraWarpecker · 25/06/2018 20:01

Advice funnily enough, I tried DS1's skinny cut 30" waist (33" leg) school trousers on my obese son. Apart from being way too long, they are actually the best fit/ cut I've found in boys/ men's trousers. They're a good shape round the bottom and a short rise. They are my back up plan....

Issyd · 11/08/2018 10:55

Hi there. My son has a form of dwarfism. He is only 13 but with an adult width and a very short stature. So trouser wise I buy ladies cropped or ladies petite with 25" inside leg. They fit him perfectly. He's a bit weird about them being women's but he's happy things actually fit. Only issue I'm having is school shirts. I can get the chest and collar size. But the length is ridiculous! The right size comes down to his knees 🙈
