My Dd (3) hit her ear/head on the corner of the dining table yesterday. She screamed, I put ice on it and apart from not letting me touch it she seems fine in herself. She's eating and sleeping as normal so I'm not worried about concussion or anything.

I've attached a picture of how it looks today and it's still a particularly nasty shade of purple. Especially at what appears to be the point of impact.

I've been working on the basis it's just a bad bruise and will go away in its own time. But I've not had to deal with this kind of bruise on an ear before so should I be taking her to the GP to get it checked out instead or carry on as we are?

That looks like a very nasty bruise. I have no idea of the anatomy of an ear...but if there is bone in the outer ear (and not just cartilage), it may need looking at. Could you ask to see a nurse practitioner at your gp?

I think I would get it looked at just in case ..read link above

Thanks for the reply Missmiller. Think I'll try and get it looked at tomorrow unless there is a noticeable improvement in the morning.
I was torn between insisting someone check it out and not wanting to waste doctors or nurses time for a bruise

Yes I think that’s sensible. I would also feel worried about wasting time but then it is particularly nasty looking so I’m sure they’ll understand why you need reassurance x

How is the ear this morning op?

HeyDuggeeandtheSquirrels · 02/05/2018 12:34

It's looking better this morning, less purple and more pink/red and the dark spot in the middle seems to have calmed down. I couldn't get DD an appointment today, so am keeping an eye on it. Me and DH agreed if it hasn't improved again tomorrow morning I'll try phoning again or go an sit in the walk in with her

Hi @HeyDuggeeandtheSquirrels just looking around as my 1 year old has something similar. What happened in the end? Hope dd is ok

Dinosharks · 09/03/2021 12:05

Hey @EmJay19, I'd completely forgotten about this thread and name changed since.

But if I remember correctly it healed very quickly on its own within a week the bruise was completely gone. There has been no lasting damage she's a pretty average 6 year old now.

Hope your 1 year old has a similar outcome, but given how dark the bruise was and that yours is younger if you would feel better getting it checked by the GP, go for it

Hi @EmJay19
I am so glad I found this thread.. .
How did the ear of your 1yr old turn out? Is your baby’s ear all healed? My 7M old had a freak accident last night involving his right ear, it’s been 24hours and he’s got bruising behind the top of his right ear and the antihelix and the antihelix has the smallest cut. I feel so bad for my little boy. What happened was his ear got caught on a old style curtain drape that I had hanging on the bedroom door (is hanging there temporarily, am changing curtain rod in living room) anyway when I bent to grab something I was close to the door holding him on my left side and the hanger which has a flat edge caught into his ear. I quickly reacted and took it off, was so scared to see the injury but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was initially, Thank goodness it didn’t poke through or go into his eardrum. I was so sad after, such a bad ending to our day. He was okay after and he did sleep well and was in good spirits today. I haven’t taken him to the walk in clinic but I may in the morning. The only thing I am worried about is cauliflower ear. My sons bruise isn’t raised or anything, am keeping an eye on it. I might go in for reassurance that all’s okay. I just don’t want my son to end up with a cauliflower ear, I am not sure how quickly that develops and if he were to develop that, would it have already appeared? Guess the walk in clinic physician will answer that question. Regards :)

@Dinosharks @Idee

Hi both. My sons ear took a couple of weeks to fade completely but all fine now. When I spoke to the gp she said to call back if colour didn’t start to change to yellow. Hope he’s ok Idee
