Vomiting Newborn, please help

DS is almost four weeks old. Always been pretty vomity after feeds.
Had a massive projectile vomit the other night full of curdled milk so phoned the doctors the next day and was told he probably had reflux and prescribed Gaviscon.
Today he projectile vomited then fell asleep for about an hour, woke up hungry so I fed him again and he's just projectile vomited again and fallen asleep.
He's been really clingy the last few days and eating a lot. Is always really moany and squeaky which gets worse at night. Thought it was maybe a growth spurt

Getting paranoid.

Wet and dirty nappies? The weird newborn noisies? My DS3 had a floppy larynx that made incredible squeaks when laying down. But all newborns make very odd noisies. Reflux it pretty common. If he is still having wet and dirty nappies then give your health visitor a call or see your gp about reflux.

This sounds similar to DD and she had bronchiolitis. Hope your DS feels better soon.

He is having wet and dirty nappies, although was constipated a few days ago. But we thought that was because we had to buy hungry formula as the shop was sold out of the normal stuff and the gaviscon.

He often arches his back and throws his head right back like he's possessed which I assumed was discomfort from the reflux.

ShesSoUnusual

Just googled that and he has been coughing, and had mucus quite a lot too.

Think I'll try and get a GP appointment tomorrow morning.

The curdled milk sick sounds like ds when he was little. He had pyloric stenosis. We had trouble getting him diagnosed as he was never dehydrated - this was because we kept feeding him lots but also kept him upright as much as possible. He started to be sick at 2 days old but the projectile part developed over time! Probably isn't that but it would be worth googling it and seeing if anything looks familiar. He had bad reflux too.

gamerchick · 29/04/2018 19:02

I thought pyloric stenosis as well. You really should take him to the gp.

Nifflerbowtruckle · 29/04/2018 19:02

I was just coming on to say pyloric stenosis too. My husband had it as a baby. It's more common in first born boys and if a close family member has had it ie. dad. I'd have a quick google and take him back to docs.

My DS does projectile vomits if he has trapped wind. Thoroughly burping during and after feeds has helped to reduce the frequency with which it happens. And as he's got older and his stomach valve has matured it happens less often. Not lying him on his back directly after s feed helps. As soon as he starts arching his back I stop feeding and give him a burp and a rest.

nicky2512 · 29/04/2018 19:06

It was the projectile part that got me. Pyloric stenosis vomiting is not like normal vomiting - it becomes very dramatic! Also, we had no family history of it and ds was not typical as he was 7 weeks before he began to lose weight because of it.

hardlysurprised · 29/04/2018 20:37

The Gaviscon will have certainly caused the constipation. All it does is thicken the milk. It has nothing in it to stop acid of reflux.
DD cried non stop to 6 weeks and arched, endlessly vomited and very slowly failed to stay on her centile. She was treated properly by the paediatric dept.
Still vomited endlessly though.

WineandDine · 29/04/2018 21:01

I was just coming on say possible Pyloric Stenosis too. My 12 week old DS was diagnosed 6 weeks ago (when he was 6 weeks) and had emergency surgery.
He was having wet and dirty nappies throughout and never really lost any weight as we caught it relatively early. I think it can present itself in different ways depending on the baby. My DS also has/had the squeaky breathing which was diagnosed as laryngomalacia (floppy larynx) and is something the large majority of babies grow out of.

Try not to worry. Pyloric Stenosis can be treated fairly easily although it could be reflux needing stronger medication. You will know if it’s PS as things will start to get worse quite quickly around 6 weeks as the stomach grows.
I was in your exact position a few months ago and know how worrying all this it so Flowers and hugs to you x

cjferg · 30/04/2018 19:27

Thanks for all the replies. I was really worried it was pyloric stenosis too.

We ended up phoning NHS 24 at about 3am and went to the out of hours clinic then into the children's hospital.

They said it was just reflux as he was fine every other way. Got prescribed Ranitidine. So hopefully that helps more.

Its horrible.

Reflux.

If hes not any better with that go back to gp for omeperzole.
My ds (7yrs old) was exactly the same.

Keep him propped up after feeds.
