What made you suspect your child had diabetes

Ok this is just a theory and a very loose one. But I'm wondering whether DS had diabetes. Mainly due to his constant extreme thirst, unable to gain weight, natural aversion to sugar, lethargic after bursts of energy.

Tbh it's the thirst hats getting me. He's 4 and must drink 2.5 litres a day, he will be fine then scream for water.

I can hardly get a cup down my 7 yo

Id definitely get them checked as a matter of urgency. The 4 Ts are what to look for. Tired. Thin. Thirsty. Toilet.
Im diabetic myself and have been since i was young- it definitely sounds likely..though not to worry you, it could be a UTI

Thanks going to ring up doctors first thing. Fingers crossed it's not :(

My friend's son has juvenile diabetes, and it was the thirst that made them seek medical advice. Do contact the Dr first thing.

Good luck.

Did you manage to get him to the doctor today? Undiagnosed type one diabetes can be a medical emergency so it is important to get a diagnosis.

2.5l of water is a hige amount. I'd estimate my kids drink about 600ml per day. It seems enough.

Ragusa · 24/04/2018 20:45

Having said that I imagine the range of 'normal' is wide, and my kids are only averagely active.

t1mum3 · 24/04/2018 20:51

@Ragusa - drinking excessive amounts is a sign of type one diabetes so I think the OP is telling us to show us why she has concerns. It's certainly an excessive amount for a four year old.

BTW OP aversion to sugar isn't really a sign. My DS craved carbohydrate which IS a sign.

Ragusa · 24/04/2018 20:56

Yes @t1mum3 I agree. I think it is an abnormally large amount of water unless the child is doing serious athletics or is living somewhere very hot.

t1mum3 · 29/04/2018 12:02

How are you doing OP? I hope you got some answers.

notmypropername · 30/04/2018 21:44

Didn't suggest a fasting test... x

How long after eating was the 7.4?

notmypropername · 01/05/2018 22:03

Appointment was at 4pm, he'd had lunch around 12.30. He had some whole milk about 2.30 according to nursery
