Baby vomiting violently after formula. Anyone know why?

Hello! I need some help / advice.

I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding DD, who is now 10 weeks old, since he was born.

A few weeks ago I tried to introduce formula. An hour or two later he was violently sick.

I have tried this every other week or so and even a different brand, but with the same result: violent , projectile vomiting a few hours after formula feed.

Does anyone have any idea what the reason could be? Plenty of babies are formula fed, as was my DD and she was fine. I just want to have the small freedom of giving DS one or two formula feeds a day, rather than have to EBF forever.

Obv feel very guilty that the formula has made him so sick.

I tried aptamil previously and today SMA, which was horrific - he had 3 ounces and 2 hours later was very ill with it (projectile vomiting, crying , retching.)

It sound like it could be an allergy. I would get him checked out, he could get dehydrated very easily. My ds has a milk allergy

Cow's milk intolerance?

DeathByGlamour · 19/04/2018 19:52

My DD was like this. Turns out she was allergic to dairy. Dr switched us to soya milk and she was much better.

QuestionableMouse · 19/04/2018 19:53

My first thought was cmpa.

Invisimamma · 19/04/2018 19:54

Sounds like Cows milk protein allergy. My ds was a projectile puker and still can’t have any milk products (he’s 3).

Your gp can prescribe a dairy free formula, like neocate or nutramagen.

Lactose free is different so don’t confuse the two.

Thanks all! If it is CMPA, would he be ok with my milk? As I consume a lot of dairy daily and he doesn’t have a problem with the breastmilk (never projectile pukes or even vomits after BFing)

Thanks. Trying to read online to understand the difference between lactose intolerance and CMPA...

My oldest had cmpa, didn’t react to my milk but was v unwell after formula.

She did react when I ate peanuts but nothing else

QuestionableMouse · 20/04/2018 00:05

Lactose is a sugar in the milk that they can react to which caused lactose intolerance.

CMPA is cow milk protein allergy. They're reacting to a protein on the milk rather than the lactose.

Hope that helps!

Carrotcakeorchocolatemuffin · 20/04/2018 00:15

Breast milk contains lactose so he’s not intolerant to that if he’s okay with your milk.

firstimer30s · 20/04/2018 18:09

Thank you, that’s much clearer!

My ds1 didn't react to milk in bm. We only discovered his allergy to milk at 6 months when we started weaning.
He did have eczema though but we didn't make a link.
He also had an egg allergy. He grew out of both by the time he was 3 and now at 6 loves cheese, milk, yogurt and ice cream!

How did he get diagnosed / how did you pick up on it?
