Help! 4yrs old Blocked nose at night AFTER Adeno-Tonsillectomy

DS had adenoid and tonsillectomy 10 days ago due to year's of obstructed breathing at night/mouth breathing. We were told the surgery went well, the adenoid was 'huge'. we were thrilled to the new prospect of dramatically improved life quality for DS.

After the initial 3 days post op, which understandably he still had snoring and blocked nose in the morning, he seemed to get better. no more snoring on day 4-5. He slept very well and very quietly. However on day 6 morning he was woken up around 5am by blocked nose. He became distressed. Same thing happened on day 7 morning. And by day 8, his nose got much worse - it gets congested as soon as he got into bed!! He would toss and turn and cry for not been able to sleep due to blocked nose. We phoned surgeon and was advised to use saline drops or Otrivine; we also add humidifier in DS room. Nothing seems to work for more than a few minutes to a few hours. DS woke up daily around 5 crying for blocked nose. This has severely impacted his ability to attend school. This is far far far far worse than before the operation.

DS never had problem falling or remaining asleep despite he had big tonsil and adenoid in the past. He was never woken up by blocked nose. But now as soon as he gets to sleep, his nose blocked up. But during the day this doesn't happen. Could any one who had similar experience help???

We had something similar but no idea why. GP suggested nebuliser with saline solution. If you can get your gp to prescribe saline solution for a nebuliser then I would buy a nebuliser. I have no idea why it happened but used the nebuliser twice a day for a week and it stopped. It may not be the same issue but just throwing it out there as I remember being so fed up as thought things would be better not worse. Good luck.

I should add it was almost like his sinuses were blocked and so needed a nebuliser to break it all up in his tubes.

We had adenoids out when he was one as he couldn't sleep at all, no mucus just blocked nose and was waking up every hour. After a month adenoids came back same situation! We figured out it must be allergic reaction to something we removed certain foods (for him it was dairy and wheat ) it's been 2 years since then and sleeps like a baby

Hope this helps
