My daughter is 4 yrs old and has suffered constapation since 10 days old its been treated for the nearly 4 yrs with movicol max dose and lactolose max dose for her age that was not working so they added picosulfate to it to but that just is to much for her little body for a daily dose she is failing to thrive to is she to old to have hirschsprung a siv been told to get her tested by a freind but what Iv read it states its a birth problem and as she pooed her first poo even tho she only did a tiny amount I'm not quite convinced I should bring it up to the doctors as when she is bad all they tend to do is keep doing emimas and not all the time they wrk she has to go bk nxt day for another 1

And she can actually go over a week with opening her bowls unless she has her picosulfate but she is so illwith seriously bad tummy pain and fever with it and doc says it's her body having a reaction to it but still they tell me to give it her

Have you tried anything else? Had her tested for milk or wheat allergies etc?
Am asking because a baby in our family was similar, and eventually she was found to have a cows milk allergy.
One of my sons has often suffered from constipation, and it helped to give him loads of water, fruit and veg, ( including prunes) but very little else till he'd regularised.
Constipation is often food related, and not everyone's food requirements are the same. I'd want to get to the cause of the problem before giving medication. What advice has the doctor given?

Yes she been tested for food allergies ect and tryed high fiber diet she always eats fruit and veg and has high fiber cerial she actually is on so much meds I just don't think it's right they keep her on 10 movicol and 20ml of lactolose a day when it dont work then her picosulfate nowing her body is reacting bad to it I'm so annoyed it's been 4 yrs now i need to no what's causing it there has got to be a problem

I've no advice I'm afraid but my son is 2 and he's been on movicol since he was 3 months old. If we miss one day he gets constipated and blocked up for a week or so! I did take him to the GP due to another issue and I mentioned how concerned I was that he still cannot poo without a laxative but the GP assured me it was normal for some children. It's difficult for me to accept that as it feels really abnormal that his bowels don't work, and have never really worked as they should. My son is only on one satchet a day so I am going to keep hoping it fixes itself, It must be so hard giving your 4 year old that much medication when you feel that you are just hiding the symptoms of something else. 10 movicol must be very difficult to fit into a day!

if you are concerned about anything and want someone to take a more proactive approach to help your daughter then ask to be referred to a gastro paediatrician for a second opinion. I think it's a gastroenterologist that you will need to see. I hope it does get better naturally for your dd but after 4 years I'm not surprised you are getting fed up.

I don't understand why you think that she may be too old for a hirshsprung's diagnosis. Hirshsprung's disease is a life-long condition caused by a failure of the musculature of the colon to form properly. It can be helped, sometimes by surgery, sometimes by medication and with diet but it cannot be cured.

Have you tried Senokot? My lo Drs/gastroenterologist don't understand why Movicol didn't work but Senokot does

MrsGB2225 · 14/04/2018 23:54

My niece was moved from
Movicol to senokot this year after being on movicol for 8 years.
