Are these chicken pox spots infected?

My 3 year old is on day 5 of chicken pox and although his appetite returned today, some of the spots around his neck look a bit dodgy - so I wasn't sure if they were infected? He has a particularly bad case of chicken pox and is pretty much covered in spots, but how do I tell if they're infected? He still has a high temperature, although not as high as it has been over the past few days. I've attached a picture of the dodgy looking spots on his neck and head.

Poor love.
I would get them looked at personally.
If you’re not already doing it, fill a sock with oats and put it in his bath, I let DS play with it, washed him with it, it really soothed him like nothing else and helped clear it up.
Don’t forget to avoid ibuprofen, Hope he feels better soon.

I tried the oatmeal bath which seemed to help. Although all the spots on his neck now have red skin around them, so I think they're infected. I'm going to ring the doctor first thing in the morning to see if I can get him seen.

Yes the redness around the shoulder/neck ones doesn't look quite right. I personally would ring 111, he may need antibiotics.

From your first picture I wouldn’t have said infected, just a really nasty case of CP, but the redness around the neck in your second picture is a little concerning.
I’d ring 111 if I were you and see what they advise.

Agree with pp the first picture I would have said they look normal but the second picture is a bit inflamed looking however was he just out of the bath in that pic? They may settle down 20-30 mins after bath. If they don't then yes I would contact gp.

This was one of my ds pox's when he had them, we went to out of hours and were told it was close to being infected but not quite... Given nothing, told to keep that one covered. When it burst it became a huge bruise, it was almost like a boil but he suffered no side effects from this and surprisingly this one didn't scar but other smaller normal ones did!

Just to update you - I went to the doctors and he said they were close to being infected. So as a precaution he gave him antibiotics.

I'm glad you've got something, will probably put your mind as ease. I wish him a speedy recovery!

My son had chicken pox and after 15 days they went looking very grumpy and horrible took him to A&E doctor confirmed they were infected and proscribed antibiotics .

MajesticKate · 12/05/2023 17:36

Hej Nailk, can I ask how did they heal? Did they scarred badly? My son has the same looking spots.

MajesticKate · 12/05/2023 18:12

And he was also prescribed ointment with antibiotics and now when the scabs fell off, the marks look like on the photo. It's been two weeks and they are not going away, atlthough look a bit better. Are they going to leave ugly scars? Please help, i'm very concerned.
