Pilonidal sinus

youngnomore · 01/04/2018 23:35

Dd 15 has pimonidal sinus. The abscess is huge. She has SN so she can’t really tell us what’s happening with her and pain levels. I mean she has a very high pain tolerance so I’m so worried she’s suffering. She was given antibiotics when we went to the OOH today. Doc said if no different by tomorrow she should be taken to a&e to have it drained. Which I’m dreading. But till then. Is there anything anyone has tried that’s been effective in helping with the pain ?
Apart from paracetamol and ibuprofen.

I had one when I was 16, and was given codeine. I had it drained, which was unpleasant, but a pretty much immediate relief. The packing and repacking isn’t painful as such, just an unpleasant sensation.
I hope it goes well for your daughter.

youngnomore · 02/04/2018 08:06

Thank you. Helps to know it’s an Immediate relief after drainage. Shame I can’t give her Codeine. She’s allergic.

Draining is pretty much the only way to alleviate the pain. Why didn’t they do in it OOH or send straight to A&E? Maybe something cool pressed against it?

Poor DD, hope she gets sorted and feels better soon.

WipsGlitter · 02/04/2018 09:06

Magnesium sulphate paste will help draw it out along with a hot bath. I've had this and the relief when it burst was indescribable.

pannikin · 02/04/2018 09:08

young I ask this not because I mistrust your judgment as a parent and knowing your own daughter, but because true codeine allergy is rare - is she actually allergic, or is it just some of the unpleasant side effects that's common with opiate-based painkillers such as itching and nausea?
I hope she gets some relief soon, this sounds awful for her, poor girl!

NicoleSalski · 02/04/2018 09:39

A friend of mine suffers from these. Once he has it drained, it comes back, bigger and more painful each time. He's had them for years and no sign of them getting better (I wouldn't worry too much about this however, his BMI is 65 which is why it returns!). The ONLY thing that helps is having it drained. Until then, he's in agony. I hope your daughter manages to find relief soon.

WipsGlitter · 02/04/2018 10:46

I'm thinking no you can get surgery to remove them permanently.

youngnomore · 02/04/2018 13:32

Thank you all for the replies.
Pannikin-you’re right. Its not an allergy but a very nasty side effect.
I gave her a very warm bath and I can now see a black spot in the middle of the lump (sorry tmi). Not sure to wait it out for another few hours or just get it over with and take her to a&e now. She’s in hospital so many times she goes crazy soon as she sees the place(she suffers from seizures). She’s also vomited and not eating anything. So can’t even keep in the antibiotics. Even though her temp is down now. Not sure why ooh didn’t do it there and then. A bit annoyed actually. I’ve just ordered her some of her favourite take out food to see if she will eat. Then maybe set off. Hate that I’m prolonging the pain for her but I’m hoping it will erupt on its own and just need to keep it clean and that will be that (wishful thinkingSad)

Ok. So I decided to call the walk in centre nurses to say if I could bring dd there for the drainage. They said they don’t do that and whatever information I was given was wrong. They would only drain if they had a referral from there gp Angry. I then gave her a nice warm bath for about 20 minuets and the abscess burst a little and I massaged it for about half an hour with a hot cloth. Lots and lots of puss came out (sorry ). But she was in a lot of pain so I stopped cleaned it out with a disinfectant and put a plaster on the small opening. I called 111 again and got a call back from thr ooh gp. She said I did the best thing by getting the puss out but still wants to see us this evening. But now she has a very high temperature again and the area still looks hot and swollen. I feel so bad right now. Should I have tried to get the puss out ?

I had one. Was told to sit in salt baths. Fortunately it improved massively wishing 24 hours of flucloxacillin.

Callamia · 02/04/2018 19:39

It sounds like antibiotics are definitely needed. I would think that it would need properly draining (I had mine done under general anaesthetic) and the packing up from the bottom of the wound to allow it to heal fully. It’s a rotten thing to have.

You were trying to do right by your daughter- who is a complicated case. You know her best, and we’re trying to avoid stressful admission.
Hopefully they have got antibiotics sorted.

retirednow · 02/04/2018 19:57

Don't blame yourself, she was in pain so you stopped, it will need Flowersdraining and probably antibiotics, take the doctors advice. Hope she feels better soon.

youngnomore · 02/04/2018 21:11

Thank you guys.
Another trip to ooh. Doc gave us a referral letter and antibiotics again. But she said since it’s oozing then maybe to just watch and see how she is by tomorrow and if it’s still not better. Then take her to a&e for drainage. Feel bad for keeping it for another day. But I really didn’t want unnecessary stress for her. saying that Maybe her being in pain is much more stressful Confused. So tired. Sad.

Poor love Sad, mine started at 16 and I still suffer 20 years later. Had an op at 20 to drain it but it came back unfortunately

Hope she feels better soon Thanks

youngnomore · 03/04/2018 03:45

We Went to a&e at last. Been there for 5 hours. Poor baby didn’t even let out a sound. Have to go back again at 8 for it to be drained. Cannot wait for all this to be over. It’s been such a difficult week for me and dd.
Stressedoutfred - I’m sorry you still suffer from this. I really do pray dd doesn’t get it back. I can’t go through all this again. Sad

pannikin · 03/04/2018 08:57

Sorry to hear she's suffering so much young
Hopefully they've drained it now?

youngnomore · 03/04/2018 13:15

Thank you Pannikin. She’s just gone into surgery. Hoping she recovers well and get to go home today. Absolutely exhausted now.

OP posts:
Callamia · 03/04/2018 15:20

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Titsywoo · 03/04/2018 15:24

Bless her. DH had his removed and although the recovery was a bit grim (it was a biggish open wound and needed to be packed everyday) it hasn't come back. If that area is hairy you can get it lasered which should stop it happening.

youngnomore · 03/04/2018 16:20

Thank you all. She’s out of recovery and doing well so far. But obviously still has lots of pain relief In her. Absolutely dreading the whole re packing process. Her wound is quiet big too.

OP posts:
flamineckpip · 06/04/2018 21:52

youngnomore, I hope your dd is recovering well. My ds had surgery to remove one last summer when he was 13. They removed a lot of tissue deep down and made a flap which was stitched. No packing involved but it has left a pretty big scar and took a full year for him to recover fully. He still has discomfort. Hopefully having it packed will be easier for your dd. DS has aspergers so I understand about the pain management issues.

SubtitlesOn · 12/04/2018 00:53

@youngnomore how is DD now?
