Baby with Laryngomalacia

Hi all, my 6 week old has been diagnosed with Laryngomalacia. During one part of the night I think when he’s in a less deep sleep it’s pretty bad and distressing to hear as his mum. The doctor said there is nothing we can do but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this. Are there are tricks or positions that help? Any advice would be great thanks!

You need to look out for other issues like generalised low muscle tone. Reflux or feeding issues. Ask about positioning. Get reviewed by a paediatrician

We propped dd's Moses basket up at one end to aid her breathing. We also got a Snuza Hero monitor that clipped to her nappy for our own peace of mind. She was also 6 weeks when we first went into hospital with it. Sympathies!

My DC had this, he is almost 4 now and it's totally gone away. He had problems feeding as a baby, he also had a problem when he moved onto solids, he could only manage purees right up to his first birthday then it was like a switch and he was able to start trying more solid foods.

He had really had reflux as a baby and was on 2 different kind of medications for that.

I remember the Drs saying they only operate when it's really serious and that most children grow out of it as their muscles develop

I had one with this - laryngo and tracheo.
They mainly sat quite upright in a special chair from newborn - the chair was provided by the hospital. Can’t recall the name of it but obviously they had to be strapped in/supported and all that aspect was overseen by the OT dept. Poor baby looked like Hannibal Lector in it. To add they also had life threatening reflux, were tube fed etc.

They are a teen now. Still have laryngo/tracheomalacia but doesn’t really affect them. They do sound like a seal barking when they cough though and they have more frequent little coughs/clearing of mucous from the airways than a person without it. They also clear their throat much more than normal.

Prop the cot up as much as you can at the head end

Get used to what is normal sound for your baby and Then you can know if it gets worse

Be careful when they colds or a blocked nose. Look for signs of working harder to breathe like the tummy being drawn in loads

They do grow out of it

Make sure you treat the reflux properly with meds
