DD has ringworm on scalp- should she have medication?

Been battling ringworm on DD and myself for 7 weeks with multiple trips to gp.
I have daktarin cream & terbinafine tablets as am covered in it. DD has it badly on her arm and in her scalp and is using prescribed canesten creams &now an antibiotic cream on her arm. For her scalp GP has given ketoconazole shampoo. 3 weeks later her hair is going patchy & bald spots.
Everything I've read online says ringworm on scalp needs oral medication to clear not just shampoo, even in children. Saw GP today & she is adamant it will go away with shampoo only & says she has never in her career prescribed anitfungal medication for a child. Made me seem like I was crazy for asking.

Anyone had experience of this?

So doing all the obvious like washing laundry & bedding daily on boil wash & not sharing tings, bleaching brushes etc, I'm like a woman possessed!

Do you have any animals? They might be harbouring the infection and passing it back to your kids in which case the animals might need treatment and you may need to completely change pillows they sleep on. Or boil wash.

Oh loveyourself how stressfull. Are you doing daily on the kerion? Do you want some iodine i can send you some. I used this too and neem oil. It was so stressfull...

Loveyourself · 07/05/2018 08:09

No I dont have any pets but I think they picked it up from my mums new puppy at christmas time. They took her to the vets 3 times before they finally gave fungal treatment. I boil wash their bedding plus not sharing towels and boil washing them everytime they use one. Its been so stressful as I work so trying to make phone calls and taking them to the doctors is a nighmare! Just wanted to hear from someone that had come through the other end Confused

Iodine would work if the ringworm was on the body but because its on their scalp the only option is oral even though it has horrible side affects (which i'm not happy about giving them). Thank you for the offer though @shewolfmum x

Not true...we had two scalps ( and all over body) and a kerion and blasted it. It took a long while but we did it naturally (daktarin on body)...

Loveyourself · 07/05/2018 09:24

How long did it take to get rid of it on the scalp?

bonzo77 · 07/05/2018 09:28

My child had ring worm on his scalp. He was given daktarin and a coal tar ointment to loosen the scales. I also used clippers to trim the hair short so the cram could penetrate better. My FIL who had once been a dermatologist was very dismissive of this course of action As he believed that oral antifungals were essential. The ringworm cleared up completely within a few weeks. I realise that shaving the hair is not ideal, but combined with a cute easy pixi cut and a hat it might be ok.

Sorry, I can't be of any help on this thread, but I do hope your DD gets better quickly.
I've been wondering about a round-ish, itchy patch on my DD's cheek. It also affects above her eyebrow/forehead area, but that patch look a lot better than the on her cheek. It seems to be getting larger and I've tried E45, Aqeuous Calamine Cream, Savlon...the list goes on! Could it be ringworm? Does ringworm itch? She has no other patches on her, so I'm not sure if it could be something else. Went to pharmacist and they recommended the calamine cream, but not clearing up

Just checking in with some sympathy.

Luckily my GP is fab and offers a 'nuclear' option at times so we did have the oral stuff.

I really really think you need to stress how much it impacts mentally on emotionally on you and the dc (to all sufferers on this thread)

And yes, to a pp that sounds like it and I'd get her seen before it spreads.

Loveyourself · 07/05/2018 22:30

Sounds like it could be ringworm. Its definitley worth going to the GP and doing your own research.
Ive done daktarin and shampoo plus my eldest has had antibiotic tablets and cream over the past 4 months! So this afternoon my my youngest head started to weep. I couldnt cope anymore and took them both to hospital. There was no one there so was in and out in just over and hour and they have given 2 weeks of oral tablets! Wanted to say thank you for all the advice and listening to me moan. Fingers crossed it works with no side effects Smile

shewolfmum · 07/05/2018 22:40

Good luck...hope they are ok with them...guesd they will have to have blood tests done? It took all summer...my 5 year old was covered. It was awful. The head cleared quicker than the body oddly...good luck with it op x

Loveyourself · 08/05/2018 22:21

Thanks. Yes if they show any signs of side effects I need to get them in for blood tests. Wow all summer! I had never even heard of ringworm 5 months ago. As a mum you are always learning x

shewolfmum · 09/05/2018 10:24

Yes...many a break down over it here!
