Convincing 3yo to wear glasses

Pikachuka · 24/03/2018 18:39

My DD is 2y11m old and was recently diagnosed as being farsighted with quite a high number and needing glasses. The doctor said she must wear glasses from now on. Today we have received the glasses (pink, pretty, light, were fitted to her face by the optician, they are best possible brand...) but she agreed to wear them for 5 minutes only, then took them off and refuses to wear them since. Nothing helps, tried convincing, bribing..... any advice please?

I'm also looking for my advice my 5 year old is very vain

Do they make dolls that wear glasses?

Can you get a fake pair so you can wear them together?

Watch lots of cartoons - read books with characters with glasses on (Pedro pony, daddy pig, etc)

Those colouring books of just faces that she could draw glasses on?

Draw on specs on a doll?

Bribe her?

Check and double check that the floor isn't making her feel like she's walking in the moon and her prescription is wrong :-(

Good luck

(It's also a little fucking terrifying!)

chocolatesun · 24/03/2018 18:58

Bribery and corruption. Maybe a treat after she’s kept them on all day.

OrangeHorses · 24/03/2018 18:59

I'd try putting them on first thing when she wakes up. If I ever get a new prescription I do this because putting them on during the day I find it harder to adjust to them. It makes me dizzy, feel a bit sick and the floor move about.

Pikachuka · 25/03/2018 07:54

Orange Horses, as I don’t wear glass myself I don’t get it, why is the floor moves about?!!

I am wearing fake glasses now, for her sake and her dad wears real ones, but she doesn’t seemed convinced... I’ve started to look for inspiring characters with glasses, but i start to realise that in our culture most characters who wear glasses are portrayed to be a bit redicilous or sloppy (suche as postman pat, daddy pig and pedro pony for example.... the minios as well) they all a bit laughable and i doubt any child would really want to relate to them.

Feel a bit lost at the moment :(

Stellenbosch - thanks for suggesting this doll, it actually looks like my mum when she was a child! :))) though her stair is a bit frightening i will definitely concider getting her or something similar.

I don't know why it happens but I was told it's quite a common sensation. I don't really have it often now as I only have small changes on my prescription but I still remember getting my first glasses when I was a teenager and the floor just felt like it was tipping away from me. Very disconcerting.

Pikachuka · 25/03/2018 18:39

How can i possibly beat this moving floor overwhelment? :(

I only had it for the first day of wearing them and like I said I found it much better if I put them on as soon as I woke up. Your LO may not experience it.

stellenbosch · 25/03/2018 21:53

They can use a heat thingy in the shop
to remould the ears of the specs - which moves the middle point of vision!

Apple23 · 25/03/2018 22:24

Stickers...

Make sure the glasses are clean so her vision isn't masked by smears.
Put the glasses on in the morning, set a timer on your phone and if she keeps them on until the timer rings she gets a sticker and lots of praise. Repeat, increasing the time.

If it's a strong prescription, she may want to take them off for a few minutes to give her eyes a rest as she gets used to them.

Pikachuka · 25/03/2018 23:56

Thanks Apple23, i’ll give it a try. Her number is quite high, it’s +4.5.

I'm an optometrist and my daughters is a similar prescription to your DD.
Children get used to a new normal very quickly. It took my DD about a week. We did have sticker chart, but I found linking glasses wear to fun stuff worked the best.

So, oh we can't go to the farm park until you have your new glasses on, if you put your glasses on we can do some play doh, you'll need to have your glasses on to watch Peppa pig etc.

Pikachuka · 31/03/2018 08:59

Underneaththeash, yes I think you are right. It’s been 4 days now that my DD wears her glasses and currently she seems quite happy to do so. She finally agreed to it on her own and quite suddenly... I think that what broke her was hearing me constantly obsessing about it in every phone conversation she overheard, but maybe even more so - the fact that I said she could only watch her cartoons and play with the phone with glasses on. So after whillingly giving up screens for 3 days, (she would do anything - only not to be made wearing glasses) she finally gave up and agreed to try on the glasses in order to get her beloved Peppa cartoons back. So one evening she had them on for about an hour only, but the next morning she demanded to wear them again, although I could see it was not easy for her (she would cry a bit when she first put them on and I could see that she feels a bit lost while looking through them) but still, she demanded to go to the nursery wearing her glasses that day!! Now 4 days on, she wears them happily most of the day. Although that first day with glasses on in the nursery was a visible struggle for her, she cried when I came to leave her in the nursery, something she almost never does! But now it seems she got used to them and feels confident wearing them, so I’m really happy! Thanks everyone for the advice, I must admit I felt really lost in this new world of glasses and I am still a bit anxious about it all, in terms of how will she cope with having to wear glasses in the future, but for now it seems she is ok and happy - so I am happy. Smile
