Measles signs? Experiences...

Hi all,

My DD has had a cold and runny nose since Sunday. Accompanied by a temp ranging from 38.6 to 41 at its highest point. She's been very restless and sleepy all week, not herself at all. Wet nappies as usual but hardly eating and sips of water here and there. Milk as normal.

I took her to our GP on Wed and she advised it was 'just' a viral thing and to keep up with the calpol.

Early hours of this morning she was sick, her temp high at 39.8 and then this morning very sleepy.

I noticed a red rash developing, like red pin pricks all over her stomach and it has spread up to her neck and on her back and feet now. Took her to gp as it wasn't disappearing when I rolled glass over it. Saw a diff doctor who confirmed it was a negative glass test as the rash dissapeared when adding pressure.

He says it's likely measles coming? But he wasn't sure?!!!

Any experiences/what is it like? What should I do?! There have been more spots sporadic around her neckline and nose Sad

Has she had the MMR?

SueGeneris · 23/03/2018 16:38

Did he say it wasn't scarlet fever?

NamechangetoavoidMIL · 23/03/2018 16:39

Any spots inside her mouth?

PeachQueen · 23/03/2018 16:39

Yes she's been vaccinated.

No mention of Scarlett fever, no.

He was sure it was just a fever rash? But also mentioned it could be measles - so helpful! Grin

Your GP has probably already said but if there's any chance it's measles, you must practice incredibly strict quarantine. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases there is so limit her contact to the very minimum number of people and definitely don't take her out in public. And a massive focus on hygiene to ensure the virus doesn't spread. And definitely no unvaccinated babies or immune-compromised people.

Can you ask your GP for a further telephone call to answer your questions?

Best of luck.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 23/03/2018 16:48

Being vaccinated doesn't mean you won't get MMR, it just means you will get lesser symptoms of it. I would take your LO back to the GP but ring them beforehand to let them know you suspect measles.

Waspsarewankers · 23/03/2018 16:50

If it's measles it's a reportable illness/disease. Your GP should surely have wanted to follow this up.

CapnHaddock · 23/03/2018 16:52

No of course being vaccinated doesn't reduce your risk of getting measles to zero. But if the OP's child hasn't been vaccinated, if it is measles, it's potentially a lot more serious.

I'm a bit surprised by the GP's casual reaction - I thought it was notifiable too.

PeachQueen · 23/03/2018 17:00

Me too CapnHaddock - I can only hope that by his 'relaxed' attitude that it isn't it?

What should I look out for over next 24hrs to confirm it?

Waspsarewankers · 23/03/2018 17:17

The GP sounds shit. "It could be the start of measles" and what.. goodbye? End of it?

By law the Dr needs to report confirmed cases of measles to DofH - Public Health protection or similar.

www.gov.uk/guidance/notifiable-diseases-and-causative-organisms-how-to-report#registered-medical-practitioners-report-notifiable-diseases

I am shocked the GP hasn't made arrangements with you to follow this up or at least said if x y z happens you need to do this that and the other!!

No experience of measles sorry so I can't advise but it can be very serious so if in doubt call out of hours - who will hopefully be more helpful than your GP.

PeachQueen · 23/03/2018 17:25

Yes I know. He said a lot but I got nothing useful. He did say that if temp continues & rash worsens to call but again no urgency?!

Grrrr they do worry you these kids!

How old is she? Both of mine had a very similar viral illness and I was just starting to get worried on ~day 5 when the red pinprick rash broke out all over, but that was effectively the end of it. A bit of googling suggested they both had roseola (also known as baby measles), which is quite common and not as serious as actual measles.

Runningshorts · 23/03/2018 17:36

Hope it's something like that for you too, but don't hesitate to call the docs back if you are at all concerned x

nocoolnamesleft · 23/03/2018 18:43

Measles rash usually bigger, and generally starts on head and neck then spreads down...

PeachQueen · 23/03/2018 20:13

Thanks running shorts that sounds like it!

She's 16 months.

I'm hoping it's going to clear up now!

Does she have koplik spots in mouth? If measels suspected would give lots vit a to protect eyes.

Oops4 · 24/03/2018 00:24

High doses of vitamin a are harmful, especially in young children. Don't do that

shewolfmum · 24/03/2018 23:56

Not if it measels oops...defo beneficial

Oops4 · 25/03/2018 00:08

At what dose and for how long? Two days of vitamin A supplementation in children with measles who have a vitamin A deficiency is beneficial. Taking "lots of" is potentially harmful advice
