9 month boy straining to urunate - help?

Hi, my DS is has been straining to pass urine for the last 4ish days, particularly at night. He is squirming around and pushing down and eventually crying out in pain. Every 30 mins or so we have an episode of this that lasts for about 15 minutes and it’s tiring and I’m not able to help him.

During an episode, his penis is physically bulging at the base and lifting slightly, as it would if he was urinating but nothing is coming out! His whole body tenses and eventually he settles. He seems better having a clean nappy and/or having his nappy open but by better I mean relaxed and he’s urinating at least 50% less than usual.

I have taken him to the drop in centre as I’m away from home and they sent me to A&E as he hadn’t urinated for about 12 hours and the nurse was concerned about the bulging. However once arriving at A&E, he had, with a lot of straining, managed to urinate and therefore the bulge had gone and the doctor said I was being daft and sent me on my way! She claimed it was normal?!!!

She reluctantly did a urine test but as he couldn’t / didn’t need to pee, she was only able to test a tiny bit (a dribble) of urine, which came back clear. He then didn’t urinate all day again until that evening in the bath. He was fine that night and the next day but the following night the same regular cycle of painful straining and not urinating occurred.

He is otherwise fit and well, no temperature and in the daytime he’s his normal self. His only apparent issues are when asleep. He also has thrush in his mouth that we are almost finished a course of nystatin for! Any help would be appreciated! TIA 😅

This isn't normal.
You need to get medical attention and insist on a second opinion. Something isn't right op

Video it and get him seen again. GP if you can get a quick appointment.

Could it be balanitis?

EastLondonmama · 23/03/2018 03:55

Thanks for your replies - I have taken a few videos to show the doctor and this did prompt her to take a urine sample but as he couldn’t wee, we didn’t really get anywhere with that.

Balanitis is possibly the closest thing I can find, although he’s missing some symptoms, but a good suggestions t take to the GP and get them to investigate further. Thank you.

Another night squirming in pain for the little guy, luckily he seems better in the daytime and he’s a sucker for a wee in the bath so will keep dipping in him there to relieve him.
