8 year old - lump behind bottom back molar

My DC had just told me their back tooth has been a bit sore for a few days. I’ve had a look and there’s a smallish pea sized lump by their back bottom molar. It’s on the top of the gum (in line with where another tooth might come through) and overlaps the molar slightly. Is this an abscess? They were only at the dentist a couple of weeks ago who said their teeth looked great so am shocked. Are they caused by decay? Has anyone had similar? What happened at the dentist? Thanks

Go back to the dentist.
Only dentist can tell you if tooth or something else. Can x-ray at dentist.

it could be a new molar making it's way out at that age.
I would observe.
make sure dc brushes well and uses mouthwash.

If the molar isn't fully through yet it can be a bit if a trap for debris etc so may well be inflamed gum tissue. Can't remember the proper name for it. I used to get it around a partially erupted wisdom tooth that cane through at a funny angle. It's an odd kind of pain. Not really toothache but not quite just gum irritation.

Good luck at dentist later.

How was he in the end? My 8 year old DS has exactly the same thing!

Sorry Eppia, didn’t get back to this. Apparently skin can begin to grow back over teeth that have come through & he must have bitten it a few times so it became inflamed. They said it will sort itself out. I am amazed it wasn’t an abscess to be honest as it looks properly pea sized like it’s full of stuff. So relieved it’s nothing bad though
