Can fainting be part of hypermobility syndrome?

Probably a daft question!

DS is 12 and was diagnosed with hypermobility syndrome when he was 8. He asked the GP why he was so bendy Grin.

In recent months he's been sent home from school twice, once for almost fainting then last week he actually passed out. Took him a day or so to recover on each occasion. Could it be related to his hypermobility?

People with hypermobility syndrome can be prone to either POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) as mentioned above, Orthostatic Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure on standing) or Vasovagal Syncope (typical faints) or a combination or two or even three.

First step would be to see the GP, who will hopefully organise an ECG and cardiology assessment. You need to make sure they check heart rate and bp preferably lying, but if not at least sitting, then standing at 2, 5 and 10 minute intervals (Google Poor Man’s Tilt Test). The best way to check exactly what’s happening is a Tilt Table Test, but not all areas will do this for a 12 year old. Make sure they don’t only look as his blood pressure and assume typical teenage faints. They need to check his heart rate and his blood pressure in both positions and look at what happens to them orthostatically.

I have POTS and Autonomic Dysfunction and my son has Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (used to be called Joint Hypermobility Syndrome) and had a TTT a couple of weeks ago. He started having symptoms when he was around 12 and that led to him fainting almost every morning, including multiple falls top to bottom of our stairs. We’ve been told he will most likely get a POTS diagnosis too.

As others have said already...yes very much so. Sorry. Go and talk to the GP about getting it checked out by a cardiologist or a paediatrician who knows what they are doing. In the meantime up salt intake, avoid hot rooms, drinks lots of water and teach to bend to the floor when they feel dizzy.

Resurrecting my thread again after GP appointment. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to reply Smile.

DS saw the GO this morning who looked at the letter from his paediatrician who we last saw 3 years ago. DS has EDS and GP was unconcerned about the faint and other episodes of dizziness/lightheadedness. Told us it was fairly normal for young people to faint.

I asked about POTS and was shrugged off...the paed had checked for Marfan when we saw him so POTS isn't an issue apparently Confused.

Would it be worth going to see another GP?
