LO not well and not eating and solids

My poor little babe has come down with some kind of flu. Her temperature was right up to 41 degrees Celsius last night so she definitely has a fever. Getting calpol in has been like torture for both of us, it's very upsetting but when we succeed it is bringing her temperature down and she seems to perk up a bit. She has been ill for 48 hours now and hasn't eaten a thing. She's 11 months old. I've tried all sorts and she just cries and shakes her head to say no. Even with sweet treats. She is breastfeeding feeding none stop though. How long do I leave it with her not eating solids before getting concerned? Thanks in advance for any advice

I think she'll be ok nourishment wise for a few days if she's breastfeeding plenty.

However more than a couple of days running of 41 degrees on the thermometer would concern me. I think that if she is no better in the morning I'd phone the GP surgery.

That's a really high temperature OP - a fever is anything over 38 and once it hits 40C it's classed as a dangerous fever.

Does she have any other symptoms? Is she sleepy/lethargic or struggling with the lights?

To be honest I'd be calling 111 at the least with that fever, and I'm normally on here telling everyone to calm down with going to A&E and out of hours!

If you have her checked out by a doctor you may like to ask for a prescription for paracetamol suppositories. It is viewed as quite unusual to use them in the UK and we had to buy them from the pharmacy but sometimes doctors will prescribe. They are so useful for our LO who would not take calpol . Hope your LO feels better soon.
Its not been unusual for my LOs to not eat for a couple of days when I'll, the fact that she is breastfeeding is encouraging and will be helping her a lot I'm sure. The fact that her temperature comes down with the calpol is reassuring. You could also use ibuprofen in between times/alongside as it does also seem to reduce temperature.

Eating wise you don’t asking asfluids are going in it’s fine (adults dont eat)

Temp wise I would get it checkedout

I was really worried with that temperature but the calpol brought it back down to around 37 or 38 so that calmed me down a bit. She's very snotty and my sister and her son both got ill the same day so I'm sure it's some kind of flu. She was sleepy but still alert yesterday. No problem with lights and no rashes or anything like that. She's a bit grumpy but is perking up when the calpol kicks in and has even has a few little giggles today. No problem with breastfeeding at all just refusing solids.

That's good OP! Thank god for Calpol I know!

Hope she feels better soon and you get more giggles!

Quartz2208 · 18/03/2018 21:45

Stop offering solids til she is better milk is best for now

MamaMilkMachine · 18/03/2018 21:51

She's a little chunk, on the 91st centile so she has plenty of reserves Smile but I was just concerned that she hadn't ate anything solid at all. Thanks for your advice everyone. I may ask for some suppositories if I do need to see a doctor as LO absolutely hates calpol. I just have to be cruel to be kind in this situation and force her to have it as her temperature had to come down. I will keep an eye on it overnight and give the GP a call tomorrow if need be. I'm alone as my DH works away and it's so scary having a poorly baby.

It's bronchiolitis season so worth getting her checked as they can go downhill quite quickly.

See www.morethanacold.co.uk for more information.

Wishing your LO a speedy recovery.
