Hi everyone I’m new and I thought I would join to ask for any advise or if any mums have experienced what I am going through with my 20 month old baby boy. It all started 9 days ago, the Friday night he was sick 3 times in his cot. Me and my husband cleaned him up and didn’t think much of it and thought he’d had too much dinner milk ect. The Saturday morning the runny poos started and he wasn’t to bothered with his milk or breakfast. He seemed fine in himself and didn’t have a temp. He wasn’t very keen on eating so we gave him some milk and every time he had a little bit he would instantly have a very runny poo. This carried on through to Monday but started to eat a little bit more but the poos kept coming. At this point we thought he had a bug and hopefully be better the following day. That night his runny poos didn’t stop and he was cramping up screaming. We did lots of tummy rubs and baths to calm him. First thing Tuesday I rang my doctors for an appointment because he had hardly eaten or drank anything. I managed to take a stool sample as well as I knew that’s what they would ask for! The doctor said to lay of certain foods and drink little bits at a time and took his stool sample to be tested. Two days passed and there wasn’t much change, poos were still bad but he hadn’t been sick again since the Friday night. The stool sample came back saying no bug/virus or worms. But still waiting for stomach infection salmonella ect which I should find out tomorrow morning 🤞🏼 I rang the doctors again and said that I wanted him to be seen as he still wasn’t right and i was worried he would become dehydrated. I also took in another stool sample as the poo had got even worse and had thrown up that day . I explained everything to the doctor and he though he could be lactose intolerant from having a virus, but a virus didn’t show upon his stool sample? So I said I’d try it and see how we got on and if he was bad to take him straight back. Well this didn’t help, he was now throwing up all the time and the poos kept coming which were awful. So I made another appointment which was Friday and explain that it had been 7 days and something isn’t right and he’s looking skinny. The doctor prescribed him some dioralyte and said to carry on the the soya milk as it would be kinder on his stomach. Also they didn’t seem to worri s because my DS has been ok in himself and not had a temperature all week. So the Friday night through to Saturday we tried with the soya milk but that was just thrown up. He’s hardly eaten anything. I decided to see if he would have some dairy milk, around 70ml and he kept it down and also had some apple purée and even a biscuit! He went to bed fine, did a poo late that night and it was looking a lot better and actually thought he was getting over this. Until this morning Sad he wouldn’t eat anything not even water so I gave him a bit of dairy milk and started smiling! Literally 5 mins I hear a sound come from his bottom and it was not nice at all! Back to watery poo. He wouldnt eat anything or drink anything just wanted to sleep. He slept for about 45mins but woke up not very happy so I gave him some water which was thrown up with large pieces of cottage cheese. I’m thinking that must be the milk which hasn’t digested?? Now he’s just laying with me and have no idea what to do next, or even what to give him next?! I hope his makes sense Blush and maybe someone out there could give me some advice?

How much has he drunk today? I’d be measuring it and making a note. The biggest risk is dehydration so check out the NHS website for symptoms and call out of hours or go to A &E depending on severity. If he’s not dehydrated then keep going with fluids - ice lollies, jelly, juice, apple/pear purees all have water in too. I can never get my kids to have diaoralyte. I’d keep offering plain looking solids too. I had one child with an easily upset stomach. If she had a bug, the diarrhoea would continue for 2 weeks afterwards each time. So even though the bug had passed, her system was irritated, causing the diarrhoea. She’s grown out of it now, at 7. Call the GP again tomorrow if you’re concerned.

Just reread my post. You only need to contact out of hours or A&E if he has dehydration symptoms, of course. X

Thank you for getting back to me! Today I've tried with the dioralyte but he just won't have it and gags. It's like he knows even if I put a few grains in Grin I would say he had around 200ml the whole day. I haven't given him any milk (dairy or soya) to see if he would stop throwing up and he hasn't since this morning with the cottage cheese lumps. So maybe that's a good sign? I get worried about him not eating enough because it been 9 days Sad

See that you have mentioned Rota virus in your title. Was he vaccinated against this?

Honeybeto3 · 19/03/2018 13:12

Yes he was vaccinated against it. He's looking better today, I've stopped giving him any kind of dairy and also stopped with the lactose free milk. Still waiting for more results, hopefully get them to day. 🤞🏼

my DD had a very upset tummy when she was about the same age - apparently it can take a lot longer to settle down than in adults. The main concern was dehydration not the length of the bug. My DD was also recommended to go lactose free as lactose can up set the stomach lining more so symptoms last longer.

I think offering any liquid (jelly is classed as a liquid!) often is one way to go.
