Dd constant runny nose

My daughter has had a runny nose since Christmas. She did have a bad rumbly cough too. I just assumed it was a cold. During half term I finally took her to the doctor who diagnosed a chest infection. So we had a week of amoxicillin and both cough and cold cleared up.

Then the runny nose began to reappear. Thick green or yellow or white mucus. It is never ending. There is no cough, no temp. It's relentless snot! I've tried all sorts .... anti histamines make no difference. We don't have the radiators on any more as I thought it might be a reaction to those. Any ideas? We went to the doc a couple of weeks ago who suggested the reappearance of snot was just viral. But it's still here and no better.

Not sure if it's sinusitis. She doesn't have a headache. She is a sensible 8 years old so I can ask her and she tells the truth. We've never had any problems like this before.

I have a doc appt tomorrow. What do you suggest I ask? Can they do a bacterial test on the mucus?

She's lost weight and it's affecting her sleep. Any great ideas?

Enlarged adenoids

applesandpears56 · 15/03/2018 20:26

Do ask for antibiotics as sinuses or adenoids they help - although drs don’t all agree on this so you may find you have to fight for them a bit

Enlarged adenoids... ok. Not heard of this. Does it suddenly happen?
Why would they produce mucus?

It can happen after a virus
I don’t know why the nose runs but the adenoids are at the back of it and lots of snot is a common symptom.
I’m not a dr - it just sounded like my dc

I had this with my daughter and the only thing that worked was taking her off diary for a while.

I had this with one of my dc - his breath was also not great, even after brushing and mouthwash. I noticed he was sniffing quite a lot and just wiping his nose rather than blowing it. For various reasons I couldn’t get him to the dr at the time so I encouraged him to blow his nose really well several times a day (had to help him tbh) and lots of hot steamy showers and after about 7/10 days it’s almost completely cleared up. incidentally it did get bad when we had been reintroducing dairy so I wonder whether there is a connection with that too.

My daughter does like milk and has a glass most mornings. But would the effect work all day? Ie would she still have really runny nose up to 8 or 10 hours later?

Why would she have suddenly developed a milk allergy at 8 years old?

user789653241 · 15/03/2018 21:08

My ds had constant runny nose all year when he was 7/8. It was environmental allergy(dust mite/pollen/cat), which developed later than food allergy. Took nasal steroid spray for a while, and still on daily antihistamine(mostly for food allergy), but it stopped completely now.

endofthelinefinally · 15/03/2018 21:10

Something stuck up there?

applesandpears56 · 15/03/2018 21:10

Otrivine spray is good to dry up snot btw

flumox1978 · 15/03/2018 21:14

I've tried portion on a number of occasions. It hasn't made any difference.
Definitely nothing up there.

I've just been reading about adenoiditus...

Piriton not portion...

And so I'm hoping it's not an environmental allergy... we live in a dusty barn and I'm not sure we could make it any better for her.

My little boy was a lot younger (8 months) when he had a similar issue. I used a vacuum cleaner powered snot sucker on him and after a few days a tiny piece of fluff from our rug came out in the snot - can only assume he'd breathed it in while crawling around. Nose issues stopped immediately.... Good luck, it must be very unpleasant for her

My son had this for about a year. Constant thick green snot. We thought it was someth8ng stuck up his nose but he had enlarged adenoids. Once they were removed and it cleared up completely.
