Having gone so many round with NHS and not getting any proper help, we are considering going private. Can you recommend a decent paediatrician?

what for?
gp? or specific issues?

applesandpears56 · 14/03/2018 23:55

Yes for what?

Thisnameistaken · 16/03/2018 14:03

Yes, GP. We have a few issues, but dont know if they are linked, so would like to talk to a gp who could advice on specialists.

in that case I would look at great portland street and great ormond street.

TroubledLichen · 16/03/2018 14:16

I’d start with a private GP, they’ll be able to refer to an appropriate specialist if required and it will be cheaper to start there too. I’ve used Surrey GP in Guildford for DD before and would recommend but not sure if that’s too far out for you?

Hello

I can recommend a paediatric cardiologist in London.

I know where he worked on Harley Street, there were lots of paediatric doctors too.

xx

Thisnameistaken · 16/03/2018 15:29

Thank you! I just called Harley Street and a GP consultation is 250 pounds. Is this fairly standard?

yes that sound about right tbh.
and if dc needs blood tests that's another 200£ or more.
any medication, plasters, swabs etc are billed separately.

viiswi · 16/03/2018 15:42

Oh yes,

We got charged £18 just to have my son's blood pressure taken!

I’m actually going to buck the trend and say I don’t think you should go private. Nhs services for children are amazing. A private gp won’t be able to help anymore than a normal one. Book a normal gp app - ask to be referred to a general paediatrician, who can do the coordination with specialists etc for you.

Thisnameistaken · 16/03/2018 20:28

Woah. That is so expensive. Can I ask why you went private? Did you try NHS first? And did you get to the bottom of the medical issues?

I totally get what you’re saying @applesandpears56, and I wish I had more confidence in our GP. We have a range of issues; chronic constipation, rashes, bloatedness and generally being lethargic and having little energy plus sleep issues, she is awake for a couple of hours every night like an insomniac.

Our GP has given us laxatives, cortisone and some condescending sleep training advice. (Like we f haven’t tried that already.) He refuses to listen and even consider being them being linked.

However when twisting his arm he agreed to blood tests. They came back with abnormal thyroid levels. They are just below what they would treat with hormones within the NHS, as I understand this is a much higher level in the Uk to the rest of the world. He phoned me to tell me basically they won’t do anything as it’s below and nothing to worry about.

It might be that, or a food allergy causing this. I don’t know, and I guess it would take some testing and time to find out.

I might have to try and fight with my GP to get a referral and see someone who can take us seriously.
Sorry for the long post. It’s just so frustrating.

OP posts:
brownelephant · 16/03/2018 20:39

why?
because our local nhs drs/hospital didn't know what to do and the specialist hospital (3 hours drive away) they referred us to had a 6 month waiting list. for an urgent referral!

Yvest · 16/03/2018 20:48

Warren Hyer - st John & Elizabeth / Chelsea & Westminster

Ahmed Massoud - The Portland

Eddie Douek - The Portland

Nathan Hasson - The Portland

All excellent Dr’s but I would try and get an appointment with Warren Hyer for anything you think might be Gastro related. He’s outstanding.

Contrary to other opinions I wouldn’t touch NHS paed care If you can go privately, the treatment with the people mentioned above is like night and day to NHS

applesandpears56 · 16/03/2018 22:02

I do strongly disagree about nhs paediatric services- it’s often the same people as you would pay to see privately! If you can get into a specialist children’s hospital like gosh, Birmingham, Evelina then you are getting a gold star service.
I do agree with you op - it’s the getting past the gp that is often the hard part! Maybe you could go private initially and then get referred back to nhs once you’ve had a diagnosis

Yvest · 16/03/2018 22:09

It is the same people but you get their time and you get them not their team which is the difference not to mention the lack of faffing about. You get blood tests, scans and results quickly without waiting weeks and without having to go backwards and forwards between lots of totally uncoordinated departments

GlitterGlue · 16/03/2018 22:29

I'd maybe start by moving to another practice. Have they considered coeliac disease?

Fairylea · 16/03/2018 22:34

If you could possibly travel to Norwich there’s a very good private gp there called Dr Mo, he charges £90 per half hour appointment. www.drmoprivateclinic.co.uk/
