Could this be indigestion?

DD9 woke at 3.30am complaining of feeling sick and within 10 minutes pretty much emptied last nights tea into loo. She said her tummy felt tender for a few minutes after however apart from being a bit windy and having a poo shortly after she has been bright as a button since. She didn't eat anything yesterday that could have irritated her however due to an unusually late evening we ate in a pub late, and were finished by 7.30. She was absolutely fine and sat up for about an hour after before going to bed. Her tea was pub sausage and mash with peas. Neither myself or DH have felt ill.

Now this has been a common occurrence over the last 6 weeks in that probably once a fortnight she does the same thing: goes to bed fine wakes up around the same time (so roughly 8 hours after eating) has one episode of vomiting and then is fine and dandy. The only pattern we are seeing is that its often after evenings of eating a bit later than usual but always done by 8pm, and that's the extreme. She also has a tendency to eat too quickly and doesn't always cut her food up well or chew food for long. Again neither myself or her dad have been ill so I'm sure it's not some weird bug that incubates for weeks before popping up again.

Anyway I'm rambling but was just looking for some advice as now the penny has dropped about the late eating pattern I actually feel like a crap mum if it's indigestion and could have been prevented 😳

Thanks for reading MN'ers

Evening all blatantly bumping my own Zombie thread as DD has been ill again twice in a week with exact same symptoms however meals in both instances eaten before 7pm with at least 1.5 hours before bed.

Update - saw a GP shortly after first post as she was ill again and secondary to her being ill my next concern is the time she's had off school. We had to do a stool test to eliminate any dormant bugs in her stomach which came back negative and by then she seemed fine so doc told us to see hw she goes.

I'm keeping a food diary too in case it's something really random and mundane that is causing problems.

I'm wondering if it could be some form of reflux? Any advice hugely appreciated Sad

I can’t be of any help but just wanted to say hi because my DS seems to have similar issues. He averages one puke every 2 months or so with no warning. It usually coincides with him having eaten later than usual (but we’re Talking about 9pm here when at a festival or on holiday or something) or when he’s had something very fatty for his evening meal. Otherwise there is no pattern and very occasionally it happens when he’s eaten a non fatty meal at a normal time. The doctor wasn’t any help and said his tummy felt normal. Just wanted I poke my head in because it probably feels like nobody else has this problem.

Re: your daughter, have you considered food intolerance? You could try eliminating the following one at a time for a few weeks at a time to see if there is any difference:

  1. Gluten
  2. Dairy product
  3. Nightshades (potato, tomato, peppers)

Hi jacqattacq thanks so much although I'm sorry your DS has similar it's horrible for them Sad
Regards intolerances I've been googling this week and had started to suspect the same thing particularly around the tomatoes and peppers as I think in most cases these may have been a part of her food (unfortunately we seem to eat a lot of dishes with these ingredients as a base).

I've started a food diary this week and see how we go. If we get to school finishing on Friday with no pukiing that will be something!

Thanks again for replying.

Ah, interesting. Apparently nightshades can cause a lot of inflammation in some people so that could well be it. I’ve recently discovered that they are what has been causing me to have near constant diarrhoea but I seem to react to potatoes worse than the others. It’s really difficult to cut those foods out because they’re in so many ‘normal’ meals but it can be done and if it stops these episodes then it will be worth it.

I was like this if I had a lot of tinned tomatoes (spaghetti Bolognese). Started around the age of 6. My mum just halfed the amount of tomatoes in recipes. I'm not sure when it got better but I know at 12 I was cooking my own tomato based pasta sauces with no issues so it didn't last forever.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 16/12/2018 13:37

Yes, it is tricky to cut them out especially as potatoes for example I've always considered a safe almost "beige " food IYSWIM? And like your DS she can go months without it flaring up and it's guaranteed we eat foods from that group several times a week. Maybe it's when eaten in large amounts...I'm definitely going to monitor closely.

Ineed thanks! Yes I think over recent years tomatoes especially tinned have become a kitchen staple! Interesting that you say you grew out of it so there's hope!

Thanks again both for your suggestions it's been useful Smile
