What’s this on DS’s finger?

Noticed 3 year olds finger has a white lump with red round about it tonight.

He does have his fingers in his mouth constantly so wondering if it could be infected?

Will pop to pharmacist tomorrow to get advice but just wondered if anyone had any clues

Not best pic as he wasn’t for staying still at all!!

What’s this on DS’s finger?

Yes, that looks infected.

NoStraightEdges · 01/03/2018 20:06

Ouch. Infected for sure.

Can he tolerate a hottish flannel on it?

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 01/03/2018 20:08

My DD had exactly the same thing. Soaking it in warm, salt water a few times sorted it out.

DD stopped putting her fingers in her mouth after it cleared up thankfully.

AuntLydia · 01/03/2018 20:09

Infection around his nail. My ds gets them sometimes as he bites them. Dr said to soak the finger in as hot a bowl of salty water as he can tolerate. You can actually see the pus leeking out when you do it, it's quite satisfying!

Sparrowrain · 01/03/2018 20:09

Infection. Probably pulled skin by nail and it's got infected (very common)

bruffin · 01/03/2018 20:09

Whitlow

Use either hot salted water or magnesium sulphate.

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 01/03/2018 20:12

Looks like a paronychea to me. You could try magnesium sulphate to draw the pus to the surface? Worst case scenario - it'll need draining.

endofthelinefinally · 01/03/2018 20:14

it is a whitlow.
Pharmacist will be able to help.

Luckymummy22 · 01/03/2018 20:29

Thanks everyone.
He’s actually got Fucidic acid cream at the moment for sore lips.
I’m wondering whether I should put a little of that on?
Otherwise I think I have got some magnesium sulphate somewhere. He’s in bed at moment so can’t soak his finger but will ‘try’ and do that in the morning.

Whitlow. Paronychia would be under the nail.

Hot flannel, mag sulph from the chemist tomorrow

Luckymummy22 · 01/03/2018 20:39

I’ll get advice tomorrow.

He had scarlet fever a couple of weeks ago (ab’s finished 11 days or so ago) so wondering if I need to make a trip to GP.

I don’t necessarily think it’s linked though!!

Try the soaking first, if it's going to work it works quite quickly.

Summerisdone · 01/03/2018 21:17

You beat me to it, but I was going to recommend fucidic cream for it. Both my DM and DS get whitlows from biting their nails and this is what the dr has prescribed them in the past.

Luckymummy22 · 02/03/2018 07:12

Well it’s got worse overnight! Think it might be Paronychia. Going to give GP a phone this morning. Just hope they can get to work!!!

Fekko · 02/03/2018 07:14

Couldn’t be a cold sore could it? DS got one on his finger (and did is stop him biting his nails - did is heck).

Seacow87 · 02/03/2018 07:14

Defo paronychia. May need anti biotics. I recommend soaking in warm salty water mean time

Luckymummy22 · 02/03/2018 07:43

Trying to soak it at the moment. It burst just before that so now just very red.

OP posts:
BedtimeTea · 02/03/2018 09:18

You could get him some warm salty or soapy water in a basin to play with? He could wash his plastic toys or something, probably would help draw anything out of the sore finger.

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 02/03/2018 14:00

I've had them a few times, first one had to be drained (walk-in clinic), others have been prescribed antibiotics but have burst before then.
