Inflamed red lip (pic inc)

Ds 13 has had this twice in a month now. We went to see the pharmacist first time around. She didn’t say what it could be but gave us carmex to try. It disappeared within a week. It’s back again but even more red and swollen. He finds it hard to open his mouth as his lips are cracking and very painful. He still uses the carmex but not knowing what it is is bothering me. Not sure if it’s infectious or what it’s caused by. Anyone else had this ? Don’t really want to bother the gp for this. Not yet anyway.

Just looks like chapped lips. Does he lick his lips a lot? Looks like when you go out in the bitter cold with damp lips and it gets red raw and sore.

youngnomore · 28/02/2018 16:25

Never thought chapped lips would be this extreme. He does lick it constantly.

Put some blistex on it, it's the only thing works on my dd.

youngnomore · 28/02/2018 16:26

I will try blistex. Thank you.

My lips do that and worse.

Could be the cold but with me it is certain food and drink that causes it. I can't drink anything like orange juice without a straw and really spicy food or vinegar can also be an issue. Face wash is also a huge trigger for me and for some people it is toothpaste.

I find that burts bees lip balm is by far the best, especially the honey or beeswax ones, the fruity ones just aren't as good. Blistex works but I find that my lips become almost reliant on it and I can't stop using it without them immediately cracking again.

It's a pain but now I've figured out what causes it it is pretty easy to stop it happening too much. The face wash was the worst thing, now I wash my face with soap and my skin is clearer and my lips aren't peeling!

My son gets really red and sore around his mouth sometimes - I found bio oil really helps! X

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2018 16:42

DS had it when she went to the doctors and she said vaseline and t has worked a treat

youngnomore · 28/02/2018 16:43

Thank you all. I will tell him to keep an eye on what he eats and if he sees any triggers. Its good I’ve got both burts bees and bio oil at home for him to try.

MY Dd has had this loads recently due to cold weather. The best thing I’ve found is aveeno cream. It stings a teeny bit on chapped lips but works it’s magic overnight . Put on plenty each application and regularly x

nocoolnamesleft · 01/03/2018 00:40

Agree it looks like lip lick dermatitis. Which is way more common in cold weather...

Luckymummy22 · 01/03/2018 18:49

My DS lips are like this. He got given Fucidic acid the other week when he was at OOHs for something else but they are worse now.

He licks his lips and his whole face goes really red and dry in bad weather.

He hates creams / Vaseline too and just rubs it off. Planning to go th pharmacist tomorrow for advice

youngnomore · 04/03/2018 17:56

So the fucidic acid made if worse or its not helped ? Been trying all suggested above. Not helped as yet. Still looks very inflamed and cracked.

My DD had this. The only thing that helped was that thick Nivea cream in a blue pot.

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream works wonders overnight.
