2 week old hip ultrasound?

ScurfyTwiglet · 24/02/2018 12:08

This morning we received a letter addressed to my 2-week old baby from the local hospital saying that an appointment has been made for him to attend the ultrasound department for a hip ultrasound. The thing is, I wasn't aware of any problem with his hips, or any other part of him for that matter... the health visitor and the midwife were both here last week and neither of them mentioned anything about his hips? Nor was anything mentioned at the hospital where he was born before we were discharged. So I'm wondering, are hip ultrasounds normal routine things which most babies have done? He did have a slightly inwardly turned foot when he was first born just from the way he was curled up inside the womb, this naturally straightened itself out in about a week with a bit of gentle manipulation every time we changed him. But maybe it could be related to that?

Was he breech? Fairly standard for breech babies

Any family history of hip disorders?

Both my kids were scanned as we have history. DS was also xrayed as he had quite significant positional talipes (feet turned in)

No, he had a normal presentation and he was born by emergency c-section...

Probably. DD had a clicky hip joint at birth and had a hip scan a few weeks later by which time it had resolved. She's now 4 and has no sign of clicky hips. Nothing to worry about especially if the foot has now turned, but best to go anyway, just to confirm that it's resolved.

Was it addressed to you or your baby? Could they have sent it to the wrong person?

LoniceraJaponica · 24/02/2018 12:17

I forgot to add that at that age letters for medical appointments were addressed to "the parents or guardians of baby Lonicera*

This is the likely scenario.
When the midwife or doctor did the newborn hip screening, they couldn't be 100% sure there was no hip issue. This is not the same as saying they found one. Because missed hip problems can cause a lot of problems for the child, double check with ultrasound is good practice.
However, someone should have told you to look out for an appointment.

Where I live, this is completely routine. All newborn babies here have their hips checked with ultrasound before being discharged from hospital. Then ALL are routinely summoned again for another ultrasound check of the hips at around 4 months old.

I see, I guess it's probably just to do with the initial turned in foot, then, but still quite strange that nobody told me to expect the appointment!

Thanks for the replies everyone!

My son had positional talipes (the turned in feet) because he had been enormous and I'm quite small so he was very, very squashed! He had a hip scan on the ward at 2 days old before discharge and then a follow up at a few months. So it is likely to be related to that, just unfortunately not mentioned to you that it would be happening!

My DD had one - undiagnosed breech leading to ECS.
