Liquid antibiotics - help!!

Emmylou22 · 23/02/2018 14:04

My 4 year old daughter has come down with Scarlet Fever and needs a 10 day course of antibiotics. It's in liquid form and she needs it four times a day. She says it's yukky, and I just cannot get her to take it!!

I don't want to force her but I've got to the stage where I need to pin her down. And even then it doesn't work because I'm on my own and I don't have enough arms.

Any tips??? Tried mixing it with yogurt but she guessed and wouldn't touch it. It's turning into a full-blown meltdown (from both of us) whenever it's time for her to take it. Not that she has had much of it so far!

Wrap her in a blanket - makes pinning down much easier.

Bribery often works well at that age

Is it the Penicillin V? That is revolting and leaves an awful after taste. I had the same trouble with my DD with antibiotics.

In the end I put 3 smarties up on the side on a plate in the kitchen and then sat her up there so she could see them. I explained that once she had the medicine she could eat all 3 all at once. The first time she must have sat there for about half an hour until she was 'ready' for the medicine (I was holding her so she wouldn't fall off) but after a few goes it got easier.

It is horrible when they are ill. Good luck and hope she feels better soon.

We had chocolate milk ready to drink as soon as the ABs had gone down, and a countdown rocket she could colour in for every dose taken.

Sweets or a drink afterwards as it does taste horrible.
But she has to take it. She could end up in hospital otherwise so as awful as it is you do sometimes have to hold them down and make them have it. Can you try using a syringe? It might make it easier. Sit behind her, one arm around her arms and one arm with syringe.
Sympathies OP Thanks

Eldest dd has always been a nightmare with medicine she even hated Calpol.
I had to wrap her arms tightly in a blanket and pretty much force her to take them. We always had a drink and some Haribo or similar close by and in sight so she knew she could have them straight after.
It isn't nice restraining her to take it but it's for their own good.

Now she is almost 12 and still hates medicine but we now threaten to take her phone away instead! Worked a treat last time she needed antibiotics, think she lasted 2 hours before she gave in!!

Mix it with peppermint or strawberry flavouring from the baking aisle

A couple of favourite sweets/treat after each dose. Chocolate buttons in our house!

Thanks all. Have left her with Daddy who's hidden it in some apple juice. Seems to be working so far but I'm not counting my chickens just yet...

Sweets. DS needed some for an ear infection and hated it. The only way he'd take it is if he could have some sweets afterwards. Not great first thing in the morning but needs must sometimes!

My DD had scarlet fever just before she turned 4. I bribed her with chocolate buttons ready in my hand to put in her mouth as soon as she had swallowed the medicine to take the taste away.

I'm have no exactly this too! My son is also 4, diagnoses with scarlet fever yesterday. Took first couple of doses no problem but then realised it was yucky one and spat it out this morning, so one wasted dose, got second one in. Tried mixing it with a drink but he cottoned on straight away. We've just had to pin him down and squirt it in, then feed him chocolate. Felt awful. To top it off I've also been diagnosed with scarlet fever today too, luckily my antibiotics are in tablet form!

Having not have no!
