8 month old heart broken when wakes up

Our nearly 9 month old little boy until the last few weeks has always been a good sleeper and usually only wakes once a night for a feed. Goes to bed at 6.30 and sleeps till 6.30 - 7am next day.

lately however he has been waking 2 - 3 times a night. This is not my query as we appreciate that this could be due to developmental leaps or even the dreaded 8,9,10 month sleep regression.

My query is however, when he wakes up, he is absolutely heart broken and in floods of tears. It takes him about 5 minutes to calm down, before he then goes back to sleep if he is breast fed usually or sometime just a cuddle. It is the same for day time naps also. If he is up for good (ie in day time) then he is happy as larry after that 5 minutes.

My question, is it normal that he is so upset? I appreciate he wont wake up and be full of joy and shout mum! but is anyone else's little one the same? What could it be? Will it pass?

Thanks.

Totally normal. Mine annoyingly did it until he was about 4 years old. It'll pass

Overtiredness would be my guess. DS was chronically sleep deprived and cried from 8-9 months until around 3 years when he woke.

DD sleeps like a dream and has never woken crying.

Otherwise teething? Cold? Not feeling 100 %, separating anxiety? So much going on at this age

Very normal I hope.

My DD (13 mo now) is a really good napper but still wakes up from her long, deep afternoon nap absolutely sobbing (but oddly not her morning nap, she's a cheery little bunny hopping about in her cot after that!)

It's usually fixed pretty quickly by a rich tea biscuit and a cuddle.

If she is overtired or teething it can happen at night too.

I wouldn't worry about it at all if he is otherwise ok. Perhaps he just has really good dreams and hates being woken up from them?

My dd (now almost 3yo) did this until 18 months - cried at every wake up and it was distressing for me sad i knew my friends kids at the same age were waking up calm and happy. We then bought her one of those gro clocks that light up when its morning and it really helped- its crazy but i think she liked knowing for sure whether it was sleeping time or waking up time if she awoke in the night or morning. Doesn't help at 8mo i realise but its normal and just keep up the cuddles and attention and maybe as a pp said you could make sure he gets something to eat as that can kick start things. Good luck, it does sound like he's otherwise being really well looked after!!
