Is gastroenteritis induced temporary lactose intolerance a thing?

That's just it really! 9 month old has been sick for 7 days now, can only keep very watered down formula down. Doctor recommend keep trying milk and dioralyte on Friday, abs that gastroenteritis only lasts a few days so should go shortly. But it hasn't. Someone has since mentioned that being sick this much might have cleared out all his enzymes, leading to a temporary lactose intolerance. Would it be worth trying low lactose formula, colief drops or just no formula for X hrs? Am forcing him to drink some dioralyte right now while waiting for a call back from 111. Just wondered if anyone had experience of this...

Yes it can be a thing. I wouldn't stop milk feeds but maybe try adding colief to see if it helps

Yes, very common. Avoid dairy for a few days and he should go back to normal fairly quickly.

This happened with my eldest... I gave him special milk for a few weeks and he was fine. I think it was lactose free

Yes it's definitely a thing. Happened to my DC. My GP suggested and prescribed lactose free formula. She gradually grew out of it but took about a year. Maybe try it for 24 hours to see if it makes a difference? The sickness had lasted 3 weeks by that point though so it obviously wasn't just gastro.

My DD2 has this a couple of times and lactose free formula fixed her within a few hours. But the sign that it was just lactose intolerance was that she was otherwise well with really loose poos. Your DS sounds to be much more unwell at the moment.

Thank you! Still no call back, may go to the shop and get some in. Can always take it back.

Taking him to the out of hours doctors at 5:30, hopefully I'll get someone who knows about this. Meanwhile I've got some colief and some lactose free formula while the shops are open, in case this is the doctors advice. Thanks everyone.
