11mo DS has been pulling at one of his ears, running is fist along his jawline and holding his face just in front of his ear since Wednesday - not constantly but enough for me to notice.
Yesterday he had a temp of 38.6 which came down to 37.8 after calpol. Today since 4am his temp has been 38.8/39 and he's doing the same things as before with his ears/face.
He's wincing slightly when I put the thermometer in his ear.
Been off food for the last few days - will only eat yoghurt, mashed up fruit etc.
He has been pretty off for a few days - long periods of crying and constant grizzling in between.
If it makes any difference we've just come back from abroad so he's been on a plane but probably only swam in the swimming pool 2/3 times.

He cut his top molars about 2 weeks ago (the inner edge is still cutting the gum) so fully understand that this could explain a lot... I'm just worried about the temp.

Does it sound like an ear infection? Or maybe more virus-y. Obviously don't want to waste their time at OOH but also don't want to leave him with a possible infection until Monday!

Personally, I would go to out of hours before it gets worse. The temperature rising isn't a good sign

Birdofathousandvoices · 17/02/2018 07:16

I’d go to OOH. He’s too wee to be able to tell you so best to get him checked, even if it is to rule out infection. Sounds like it could be ear infection!

rachrach2 · 17/02/2018 07:17

I'd call 111 for an out of hours appointment too. I hope he gets well soon.

ArgosTheDog · 17/02/2018 07:18

I would get him seen today

Foodylicious · 17/02/2018 07:23

I would def get seen today.

Saw an advert for a new online nhs gp service, claims you 'see' a gp online in minutes 24/7, I know they can't physically check but may advise and I am guessing can make a OOH appt if needed as they are also nhs. Haven't needed to use it myself but have wanted to try it out!

I have seen ooh a couple of times with little one- they have always been lovely about checking things/ giving advice. Ooh is for this reason- if it was a weekday you would get him seen. Call and get appt.

ANother27 · 17/02/2018 09:28

My ds has all the symptoms you described as well as snot looking gunk pouring out his ear yuk! And it was an ear infection. Bless him he's obviously in pain id take him to ooh if I were you Thanks

Luckymummy22 · 17/02/2018 11:17

I’ve been to OOHs a few times with my kids and ear infections.
It can be so painful and at that ages they tend to treat with antibiotics

lljkk · 17/02/2018 11:27

It sounds like classic teething. The nerve in the jawbone that is painful when teething, runs all way back to the ear, so both seem painful together. I'd manage him at home, myself.

JennyOnAPlate · 17/02/2018 11:31

A temp of 39 isn't classic teething and suggests he has an infection. I would get him seen today Flowers

HereWeGoAgain456 · 17/02/2018 17:06

Thanks everyone Flowers

We had an appt earlier and he's got an infection in both ears, bless him. Very glad I went now!

Aww wee soul. Even if he hadn’t had infection, it would still have been worth the check. My DD had a few ear infections over a period of 3 months - the nurse on NHS24 said that when they’re too young to be able to tell you what’s wrong you should get them checked over if you’re concerned.
Hope he feels better soon Flowers
