Squint - good place to go

My son in 6. When he was halfway through reception (2 years ago) he suddenly developed a squint. He had been absolutely fine when we had his eyes checked at 3.

Initially we went to specsavers and got him some glasses. He then had his eyes checked at school and it was found that he couldn’t see with his glasses on and was better without much to our surprise. We then saw a vision therapist who prescribed some very different glasses but he can see better. Then we went to the local hospital and again from having used drops, he couldn’t use the prescribed glasses as made things blurry so we stuck with the vision therapist glasses.

He will be 7 later this year and the VT is keen to spend a couple of hours each day for 2 weeks with him doing a number of exercises to try and strengthen the muscle and see whether that can help the eye which drifts in.

My issue is the local nhs doctor chap loathes the VT and the VT doesn’t like the NHS way of doing it. At the end of the day I would like my son to have the best vision possible and cosmetically correct looking eyes.

Any advice on who to see for a third opinion? Sorry it’s long but I have lost faith in the traditional route but I’m not sure if the alternative route is much better?

Where did you find the vision therapist? They usually work outside the mainstream in the same way as homeopaths, osteopaths, etc. I'd be concerned if they were offering advice that was wildly different from that coming from the NHS. Has your son been assessed in a multi-disciplinary service, i.e. ophthalmologist, optometrist, and orthoptist? If so, perhaps ask them for a re-assessment at another eye hospital?
