My son is 6 weeks old. He suffering from constipation and trapped wind so he's often a bit whiny and crying. He's not saying settings for very long. He's on lactulose. I noticed tonight after settling him he was quite cold to the touch. I did is temperature with a Tommee Tippee thermometer. It came back at 31.1. I want to show whether I did it correctly so I will redo it. He's taking his feeds very well and apart from crying and screaming he is having good alert periods. I'm also what is best to do. I'm a first time Mum.

I think given his age you should phone 111

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 15/02/2018 23:12

In fact - if he really does feel cold take him straight to a and e. Why take the risk - low temp is a warning sign of sepsis in a child of this age.
Hopefully it’s just your thermonitor being wrong though!

Please go to a&e, if you call 111 they will get you an appointment at the hospital within 2 hours. Please trust me when I say it is not worth waiting. When my LO first contracted meningitis as a newborn he was perfectly happy and alert just had a bit of a high temp, (it’s the same with low temp). Hope it’s all ok but better safe than sorry.

SilverdaleGlen · 15/02/2018 23:18

Go to A&E that's too low

MissImperfect93 · 15/02/2018 23:33

His temp is now 34.7. And he has just had a 5oz bottle. Just won't settle

Advice still stands- go.
Hopefully it’s nothing but why take a risk. Symptoms of serious illness can be very subtle in young babies. Having a low temp and not settling is two major red flags. No dr will think you are wasting their time with a 6 week old. Please go now.

AnnaT45 · 15/02/2018 23:45

I echo PPs and would go to a&e. Drs never want you to take a chance with a little baby. Hope he's ok

mommybear1 · 15/02/2018 23:47

Yes I agree with the other posters go to a+e I promise they will not think it's a waste of time. For your peace of mind go - you seem to feel something is off go with your instincts. Good luck Thanks

MissImperfect93 · 16/02/2018 03:37

I'm in a&e. I got his stuff together and set off soon as you started posting. His temp was on a normal range when I arrived. Just waiting for him to do a wee to get tested. He has finally fallen to sleep. Just not sure how long it is going to last

Is that one of the underarm thermometers? I suspect it’s the thermometer not the baby, as 31.1 is incredibly low for it to be normal by the time you get to A&E

mommybear1 · 16/02/2018 12:04

Hi OP glad you went how are you both now? Xx

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 16/02/2018 13:16

Well done. Hopefully everything was ok? And it was just your thermonitor?
I know it might seem an overreaction but honestly if there’s something out of the ordinary on a baby this young then get it checked - immediately. As they get older they get more robust and there’s more to go on and then eventually they can tell you what’s wrong. But, in a very young baby something life threatening can only one or two symptoms - like only a temperature, or stopping feeding, or looking mottled. They can then deteriorate really rapidly - like in the space of a few hours (they can also improve really quickly too). No dr will ever mind checking out a baby under a couple of months.

MissImperfect93 · 16/02/2018 23:52

The thermometer was an inner ear thermometer. But we suspect it could have being that. Or that I had him wrapped in the blanket for a bit first and manage to raise his temperature nicely.
He has being his normal self today. Kept an eye on his temperature to ensure he doesn't get cold in case that was the issue.
The doctor was happy with all the test. Did agreed he was a bit out of sorts by the way he was crying but other then that he is nice and healthy.
Thank you for all your posts
