2yo vomits once at night, fine during day

So, the week before Christmas, my Son was unusually tired one day and I let him have a nap, he woke from this nap and vomited(unsure whether he woke because he vomited or vomited on awaking). For the following 4 nights he vomited in the middle of the night (seemingly in his sleep) but would go right back to sleep no problem!

This ended on Christmas Eve. Since then there have been no issues, so I wrote it off!
Now since Wednesday night (4 nights ago), the same thing has happened! He is sick once a night. I took him to his GP who basically said he couldn't say what was wrong, it's too vague. He didn't even try and think about it.

To me this seems very strange (but he's my first, I'm a single parent, I could be wrong). He has been a little more clingy, he hasn't tried any new foods or ingested anything dodgy. He was sent home from nursery on Friday due to a runny bum, but I'm assuming that's because he's throwing up nightly and it's upset his bowels?

Something just feels off, he's completely fine otherwise, so I don't understand it!

Thanks @minmooch I am trying to be as rational as possible. I'm sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis.

DS is only 19 months so it's difficult to know about headaches etc as he obviously can't articulate it. I am looking for signs of balance loss etc, eye movements seem OK, no fits or anything of that nature. As far as I can tell he can see ok, head position is normal. He's not on amazing form but he's not too bad, playing fairly happily.

We have had one very explosive, quite foul smelling nappy and another fairly loose one today which I'm hoping points towards a tummy upset albeit a strange and protracted one.

I will keep monitoring and if he is sick again I will go back to the GP and be clear about my concerns.

Further thought on this - as a non-invasive investigation, you might want to get his eyes checked. I'm in the same boat as minmooch - my son had a brain tumour, so I know it is important to rule out the nasty stuff. Our son's MRI was ordered by his ophthalmologist, further to concerns raised in her investigations.

I thought I'd update in case anyone finds it helpful.

I took DS back to the GP this morning. She didn't dismiss my concerns and was quite thorough. She checked the backs of his eyes, eye reflexes and general reflexes all of which are normal.

She identified a red ear drum so potential ear infection which might be the culprit and so has prescribed antibiotics for that. If vomiting continues over the weekend we are to take him back and they will review.

So basic position is that there is nothing to suggest anything sinister at present (and a reasonably likely cause for the vomiting has been identified) but we will keep an eye and if it continues past the weekend I will request a referral.

Good to hear that. Let's hope the antibiotics do the trick - great that you have a plan just in case but that sounds promising.

Sounds like the stomach flu-there has been a lot going around late last year/this year. Alternatively does he have a bottle at night? My eldest would throw up like this sometimes due to trapped air resulting from having a bottle in bed.

We've had two vomit free nights so I'm hoping it was either a tummy bug or the antibiotics are working although getting him to take them is fun! Currently using chocolate biscuits as a bribe!
