Help nappy rash

Afternooncatnap · 06/02/2018 09:57

Ds 1 year has had the squits from a cold.

He now has really bad nappy rash. His bottom looks really sore and his little seam thing is bleeding.

Can anyone recommend anything to help. I have tried orabase, that seemed to help stop it getting worse but didn't heal/sooth. He also winced when I put it on. I also tried sudacream and metanium.

Also should I give him calpol for the pain.

First, absolutely do give calpol. Second, the best thing for him would be to leave his nappy off as much as you can while it's so sore. Third, is there a chance it's fungal? Thrush can make it ten times worse. The gp can prescribe antifungal cream if it is and it will heal far quicker. Otherwise, barrier cream is the way to go.

Agree, definitely give regular pain relief.
I'd keep using the orabase paste and don't wipe it off. It should stick to the surface and protect the skin. Only wash off in bath. Is it the paste or gel?

MistyMeadow · 06/02/2018 10:19

Yes to calpol and metanium cream, the yellow one, it's magic

MistyMeadow · 06/02/2018 10:20

Oh sorry I see you've tried metanium Sad

If it's bacterial, try silver nappy liners (find on Google). They are used to line any nappy, washable or disposable, they're polyester with silver thread in, the silver is antibacterial - just wash and re-use.

Vaseline then bepanthen on top. Or breastmilk if you have any- this would be my first choice.

Whisked egg whites always worked wonders on my dcs nappy rash

IwillrunIwillfly · 06/02/2018 10:33

Are you mixing the orobase with vaseline? If not mix 50:50 orabase and vaseline into a smooth paste. Will create a better barrier than just orabase. As much nappy off time as you can and clean with cotton wool and warm water rather than wipes. If its still not clearing up, might be worth seeing the gp incase its bacterial or thrush.

RIng your GP and get a prescription for either fucidin or fucibet. DH is a GP and we always have tubes of both.
When DC3 suffered from these types of nappy rashes (weeping sores and hot redness from illness/runny bottom), I would use a base of metanium to treat the rash itself and fucibet/fucidin to reduce soreness and inflammation, as well as heal the sores. The fucidin or fucibet (you want the one with hydrocortisone) will reduce the pain and soreness overnight. Then you can really concentrate on getting rid of the rash with metanium (which will already have been reduced by the fucidin/fucibet).

Search MN for mire threads on this as there are many!

I agree, worth seeing the GP.

What works for us: keep it dry. A piece of fleece (cut from a blanket) inside the nappy works well. It wicks thefluid away a treat.
A great barrier that does not come off when you wipe: we like sorbaderm spray. Cavilon spray is also good.
A bit of steroid cream 2x a day. We use eumovate.
A fungal cream 3x a day: we use canestan
Cleaning up with water or baby lotion and cotton wool. Not wipes. Dry well with a tissue before applying cream / spray.
Nappy off time, easier said than done once they’re mobile, but even 5 minutes after each nappy change helps.

DS3 used to get it very very badly. He’s still prone to it but now we know the ropes it doesn’t get to the bleeding stage.

Hi everyone thanks for all the replies. I'm going to give the orabase and metanium a go with vandalise mixed in. If no better I'll try get him in at the gp. I'll try risking some nappy off time as well.

Will water wipes work the same as cotton wool and water?

Ime water wipes not good. Still got the rash. Cotton wool and water is very easy once you get the hang of it. Buy a pleat not balls, tear off some and use a sports bottle to squirt water on it. Or squirt baby lotion or oil straight in the bum and wipe with the cotton wool. I find lotion + CW very easy and effective and hate using wipes if he poos when I’m out!

ArnoldBee · 06/02/2018 15:09

For nappy off we used a plastic sheet covered by an old bed sheet.

ArnoldBee · 06/02/2018 15:10

And bathed rather than using wipes - just dangled the bottom half in the bath.

Kidssendingmenuts · 06/02/2018 15:11

Vaseline and lots of it! Worked a treat with both of mine x
