Regular fevers 10 month old

My son has just turned 10 months old and is generally happy and healthy.

I've gone back to work full time and he is in nursery. Back in November when I was doing some keep in touch days he was in nursery 1 day a week. Before his first session he started coughing and wasn't very well. He got given antibiotics by the doctor and was better the following week. Since then he's been coughing on and off, often sounds like he's full of phlegm, sometimes sounds like a cat purring... since starting nursery full time in January he always has a runny nose. I've taken him to see 3 or 4 different doctors since November and all of them have checked his chest and back and said it's not on his chest so nothing to worry about.

I'm not worried about all of that as I know he'll pick up a lot of stuff at nursery and the cold weather isn't helping. However, he keeps getting a fever and this is now concerning me. He hasn't actually lasted a full week at nursery yet as the one he is at has a policy that if they give Calpol, I have to pick him up within the hour and he can't go back unless he's been Calpol/temp free for 24 hours.

I decided to book a doctors appointment a couple of weeks ago to discuss the cough. When I turned up at nursery to collect him, they said he had another fever. It was over 39. I took him to the doctors and she said he had a red ear. She gave me a prescription for antibiotics but I said I didn't want it as he's already been on antibiotics 3 times and he's only little!! The last time he had them was because he had a red ear. Having read up on this it says that most are viral and that antibiotics won't help. There is a history of ear infections in my family.

When he gets a fever (always over 38 and has gone up to high 39's but never 40) he seems generally fine. He still plays, eats all his food and drinks his milk. There is no discharge from the ear but his cheeks go red and this is the only indicator. He touches his ears every now and then but I'm talking once a day or so and isn't tugging them - just puts his hand on them. Typically it lasts a couple of days (he's fine between Calpol doses for about 8 hours or so) then he's good until the next week when it happens again. Last week he had a fever Monday morning first thing, then at 3pm and that was it until Wednesday 5pm. Then he's been fine until last night when he got another fever. He had Calpol at about 6pm and was fine through the night but woke with red cheeks so I'm at home with him as the nursery won't take him.

Has anyone else had experience with regular fevers? Regular ear infections? It just doesn't seem right to me but I don't think the doctor will be interested.

You don’t get to choose when to give your baby antibiotics - if a dr has prescribed them you need to give them. Not to do so would be negligent and quite frankly social services should be getting involved.

I discussed it with the doctor and explained I didn't want them. She said if he got worse in a couple of days or was sick or off his food then to pick them up, otherwise don't. He was better by the next evening. But thanks for your constructive response to my issue.

Well what could be happening is that he has an infection he’s not clearing - and does actually need the antibiotics...

Consider glue ear or adenoids as an underlying problem

My children have both had on and off fevers and a runny nose every time they are teething. Have you checked to see if he's got teeth moving about causing trouble?
