Tongue tie or not?

Just wondering if anyone thinks I should chase this up?
One HV said it could possibly be a little bit tied, GP says not.

Looks like my dd’s ..... I was told by hv and gp that it wasn’t, I thought it was. She’s nowv14, I’m still sure it’s tied, but she talks normally, eats, drinks etc ... only thing she can’t do is stick her tongue out.

BabyOrSanta · 31/01/2018 17:55

Did you ff or bf? Did she have a problem with either?

Just bumping up for words of wisdom

Are you struggling to feed?

Two of my DC had posterior tongue tie that caused feeding problems.

If gp says no I wouldn’t worry. Maybe get another professional (go) opinion.

A lactation consultant came to visit me when I was getting recurrent mastitis. She decided DS must be tongue tied because he wasn’t talking much (18 months old) and didn’t poke his tongue out far when she asked him too.

She gave me a long list of the ways his life would be ruined if I didn’t fix it immediately. She also specifically told me not to go to a gp as they’re not allowed to operate on them until a certain age in this country, and gave me the number of a guy who would snip it on the sly.

I was pretty upset with worry at first then my brain slowly started clicking into gear. I read a bit about the horrors of getting tongue ties snipped, leaving kids permanently drooling and such, and took him to a gp.

They said he was fine. He does not have a tongue tie. Always go with the gp opinion over the HV.

BabyOrSanta · 01/02/2018 10:37

Struggling very much.
She messes around on both the breast and the bottle which wasn't so much a problem a few weeks ago but now she needs more milk it is getting more of a problem.
Obviously on the bottle I can see how much is coming back out (every few sucks) and give her more but she's falling asleep on the breast and struggling to gain weight (1lb in 6 weeks, 6lb 8oz at birth)

For everyone who has been told tongue tie isn't an issue, there will be someone else who will tell you that neglecting to get it snipped will cause problems.

Personally, I would trust a feeding specialist over a GP on matters of feeding, GPs typically (not all, mind) have little knowledge of infant feeding, especially breastfeeding. No GP is going to snip a tongue tie there and then in a surgery because t hat isn't something they do at any age. If there is a concern about TT and feeding issues AND weight gain issues, then yes: I would see an NHS maxfax who runs a tongue tie clinic. Many run private self-referral clinics.

Ragusa · 01/02/2018 19:46

If a significant amount of milk is leaking out of her mouth with a normal-flow teat (on the bottle) then I would strongly suspect something is not quite right. Trust your instinct.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 01/02/2018 20:12

Definitely pursue a specialist. I went through hell with my DD before we sorted her TT. When DS was born, I checked him for TT myself. I self referred via my 1-2-1 midwife team and spoke to my LLL contact for support while waiting for our appointment. Although DS wasn't "that bad" in terms of his weight gain (slow, but always went up) and my discomfort (none, really), when seen by the specialist, she confirmed that his tie was causing significant problems with his ability to organise sucking, breathing, etc. Vindicated!

Definitely push for help. TT knowledge is abominably patchy across.the NHS and it.shouldnt be.

We have a private appointment for tomorrow! It's money I really don't have and I think the bank will be phoning up but I really don't care. It's making me (mentally) so I'll I can't cope much longer. If it's not tongue tie then at least I know I've tried which is the main thing. If it is tied and she can feed normally then that is the best thing that could happen, whether boob or bottle.

So ill not I'll

At my private appointment it was a fee for consult, plus a few if a cut was necessary. It was, I knew it would be. Getting it cut is how we're still feeding. Getting it cut was cost equivalent to 13 weeks of formula. I'm in profit now.

Twinkletoes2018 · 01/02/2018 20:57

My daughters tongue tie was missed until a different hv spotted it when she was crying. You've done the right thing to get an appointment as if not feeding great it's good to exclude it. The snipping if it was over in seconds and she only cried for 30 seconds

athingthateveryoneneeds · 01/02/2018 21:20

Oh best of luck. TT division isn't always an easy fix, but they should offer a follow up appointment if you need it. The woman who dealt with DS wasn't happy with her first attempt and snipped him twice in one appointment. I felt terrible at the time but he's still feeding at 13 months old now so it was the right call.

DD, however, still needed ebm top ups for several weeks after her division until one day she just wasn't hungry for a bottle after breastfeeding. She went from 3 bottles a day to none, in about a day and a half. It was amazing. The lactation consultant told.me it happens a lot after the 10 week growth spurt - their mouths suddenly get bigger and it all falls into place.

Just wanted you to.know that it might be an easy fix, and it might still require more work, but like you said, at least you'll know you tried.

frazzledbutcalm · 04/02/2018 13:06

How did you get in OP? Is it a tongue tie?

BabyOrSanta · 06/02/2018 12:52

It was tongue tie!
It was cut on Friday and she's now getting back on track Smile
I do wish I'd got a better pic so that I could show you side by side as it's just visible at the back

That's great. Hope it continues to improve.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 06/02/2018 13:21

Onwards upwards! Good luck. :)

Mouthfulofquiz · 06/02/2018 13:30

I noticed my little boy's tongue tie as soon as he was born and started to cry. It was tied right to the tip and his tongue made a 'v' shape. I was ebf so he had it shipped on the NHS at 7 days old. It was very quick and simple and he can stick his tongue out now all the way, and we bf for 18 months.

Frazzledbutcalm · 06/02/2018 14:42

That’s great news baby

Wonder if they’ll do my dd aged 14? Doubt it now though as the only problem it causes is not being able to stick her tongue out ....

But eating an ice cream is a Human Right!!!
