What to ask the dr about partial/full sight loss

Hello,

I've recently made a new friend and she has a little girl that is going for an MRI/dr appointment on Friday.

Her daughter is 20 months old, they don't know if she is partially sighted or has completely lost her vision.

Neither do they know whether it's to do with eyes or if it's neurological.

She wants to ask the dr questions but isn't sure what to ask for either circumstance.

Just wondering if I could get some help that I could pass on to her please.

Thank you

I have a daughter who is disabled by missing a hand. That's nothing like as serious, but what I'd ask are things like:

  1. How much can she see?
  2. What is the reason why she can't see?
  3. Has she ever been able to see?
  4. Will it get worse?
  5. Are there associated syndromes/other potential symptoms to look out for?
  1. Is there anything that can be done to help?
  2. Will she need any operations?
  3. What adaptions will she need?
  4. What is the next step?
10. If it can get worse/other symptoms is there anything recommended for slowing down symptoms?
  1. What support is there out there? (eg charity/support groups)

  2. Will we get DLA and will they be happy to be named on the form?

  3. What is the future-mainstream school for example?

  4. Are there any local mums in a similar situation who may be able to meet?

  5. How can we best help her?

  6. Is it genetic or any possibility of it being genetic? (especially if they want more children)

  7. How often will we be seeing specialists/OT/any other medical people?

  8. Is there anything we need to be extra careful of? (eg if she's keeping her eyes closed all the time is this an issue)

  9. If there is a problem and we need to speak to someone quickly what are our options?

  10. If they want to: Is there counselling available for the family to help them come to terms with it?

Is this the first appointment? Is it a new problem? There’s lots of support out there, I’m based in Scotland so might not be relevant but maybe can point the right direction.
Ask for any results written down, often times there’s lots of numbers and it’s easy to loose track.
