What is this on my child’s gum

He’s 6. Been complaining recently about his gum hanging down and soreness. Had a look but assumed he was talkinb about the roof of his mouth and I couldn’t see anything.

More complaining tonight and blood in his mouth so I searched and found a red lump hanging down from the back of his gum (where his adult teeth would come in). Looks very strange.

Managed to take a photo. Anyone know what it is?

It could be a skin flap as the bigger back teeth cut through or something more sinister (oral cancer) I’d call and make a dental appointment.

Blimey pp oral cancer that's a bit extreme
It looks and sounds exactly what I have where my wisdom tooth is coming it is exactly a lump that has a flap type thing and is very sore at times! The dentist says the best thing is to rinse it really well otherwise food can get under and infect it. I would take your child to the dentist ASAP they will know more than the doctor.

It's an eruption cyst.

Isadora2007 · 26/01/2018 21:29

Doesn’t look good. Nor do his teeth to be honest... does he see the dentist regularly? If definitely get it looked at as soon as you can.

BrutusMcDogface · 26/01/2018 21:31

I agree with the pp; his teeth look bad! Does he go to the dentist?

tigertigerlion · 26/01/2018 21:32

I think oral cancer can go to the bottom of the list for now 🙄 but he should see a doctor or dentist ASAP in case of infection

brownelephant · 26/01/2018 21:36

agree, he needs to see a dentist.
the teeth don't look very clean tbh. sorry.

but the blob looks like a tooth is about to errupt

Isadora2007 · 26/01/2018 21:53

Apparently eruption cysts can be caused by damaged or cavity/decayed teeth. So it’s worth getting him checked.
I’m hoping he had maybe just eaten something sticky and staining before the photo 😳

His baby molar teeth are covered in food in the photo, so not able to comment on those but the dark red bruised swelling is definitely an eruption cyst- this will resolve once the 1st permanent (adult) molar erupts any time soon. Go to your dentist for reassurance.

Thanks for replies.

Yes his teeth are covered in chocolate. I did want to wait to take the photo but as he was willing to comply at that moment I went ahead and took it even though I know his teeth look bad.

They’re not btw, he eats chocolate once or twice a week (if that). Drinks water or squash no fizzy juice. Snacks on fruit. Dentist said his teeth are fine. Never had any work done.

Anyway I’ve booked the dentist appointment but on further inspection I can see there is a molar there underneath the cyst so I’m sure it is an eruption cyst. Thanks again.

Hi, I know its been a while but could I ask if you found out what it was after your dentist appointment?
