I'm just wondering if anyone's child has suffered from this before, what symptoms they had and how long recovery Was?

My little boy is 17 months old and started to take sick last Wednesday, Friday we went the out of hours doctors as he was getting worse and was told he had tonsilitis and given antibiotics. He's continued to not improve and yesterday we went back the doctors to be told he hasn't got tonsilitis but adenovirus and has all the symptoms. He's sleeping pretty much all day, really stuffy nose, cough and now to top it off has conjunctivitis. He looks absolutely awful and I feel like he's never going to get better.

Any comments appreciated 😊

Hi.
My son had this at 11 months. I can't exactly remember the early symptoms, but he was running a very high fever on a cycle, every few hours. I remember seeing 40.5 and assuming the thermometer was broken. I'd never seen such a temp!

I then realised he'd not had a wet nappy for about 36 hours, and was getting lethargic. Took him to A&E, and he starting passing out. Lots of panic, and they eventually got a canula into his foot and hydrated him a bit. We were admitted and stayed for 3 nights. Still lots of fevers, vomiting, liquid poos. We were kept in isolation, and I wasn't even allowed out to the main ward.

I think it was the second night in hospital when his fever started to ease off. They were slightly mean with the panadol, only giving it over 39, but he was spiking up to that pretty quickly and thankfully responding well once he had it. I just had to keep on them as soon as I felt his temperature start to rise.

Looking at my notes it looks like he went downhill for 2 days, then was at his worst for 2-3 days, then once the fever broke he was well again in a few more days.

It was awful to be honest, as you can tell! So you have my sympathy. The doctor later said adenovirus was a pretty nasty bug. My son was also premature so was still very small at 11 months, and he was so skinny afterwards it was scary. But he plumped up again (as much as he did) and is now a happy 3.5 year old.
