mouth injury?

I have a 17 month old who is only just starting to walk - still very wobbly. Yesterday evening he fell and caught his mouth (he was chewing a toy at the time!). There was a fair bit of blood (I know it always looks worse in the mouth as mixed with saliva), he cried a lot, eventually he calmed down and wanted a feed (he still occasionally breastfeeds), and when he'd finished I checked again and it had stopped. I couldn't see any obvious injury, but he wouldn't let me look in his mouth properly and as it was obviously tender and had stopped bleeding, I didn't force it. He slept well last night and has eaten and played normally today. Tonight I put him to bed and he started screaming after a bit - light was out so no idea what he'd done, but when I couldn't stop the screaming I put the light back on and once again he had a mouthful of blood. Again, he wanted me to feed him and again the blood was gone by the time he'd finished. I have no idea what to do. Tomorrow is Sunday so most places are shut. Do I take him to the nearest hospital for a check over? I don't want to waste their time, especially if it isn't bleeding at the time. Do I wait til Monday and visit the GP to see if he's got a wound that he's re-opening inside his mouth? Do I just leave it as it stops so easily and hope it heels itself?

Oh gosh how horrid. Poor munchkin! I would plan to get him checked out on Monday, but if the same thing happens at any point during the day tomorrow take him to the hospital. As you say mouth injuries do look dramatic, but it really shouldn't have opened up again should it? My brother did similar as a toddler and ended up needing disolvable stitches. I really hope your little boy is fine tomorrow.

Thanks. I'll do that, GP Monday unless it starts again. If it starts again but then stops just as easily, do I just explain that? We have a small hospital near us but it has no A and E, so I'd have to ring NHS111 for an appointment, or it's a 45 minute drive to the nearest A and E?

How's your monkey doing today Freya? I really hope it's all forgotten about now!

Thanks. Seems to be. No blood yesterday so didn't go to the hospital, and can't get an appointment today as he isn't bleeding anymore, so think that's the end of it. I still can't work out why it bled again after 24 hours but hopefully it's now heeling, whatever it was! No pain, playing and eating normally.
