Toddler itchy bottom

Foreverhopeful22 · 16/01/2018 19:11

I am pulling my hair out!!

She is 2 1/2 years old and for last 6 weeks been complaining of itchy bottom when she poops. So I gave her the tablet from pharmacist for worms

It made no difference

Doctors have done urine samples and they are clear and yesterday after a fight sent a poo sample off

Tonight she is really itchy it's not red but again straight after a poo she was itchy.

Her appetite is ridiculous we have gone from eating nothing to eating huge amounts

For example today

Porridge huge bowl, a slice of toast and 3 fromage frais, lunch crackers cheese ham and then a sandwich ( 2 slices of bread) , hungry an hour later wanted a hotdog, she ate two. Dinner lasagna, chips and peas followed by 3 more fromage frais and a chocolate cake.

Doctor laughed and said that it's good . I said it's not normal she usually would eat half a slice of toast, half a sandwich and I would be lucky if she ate a fish finger and 6 chips

He just dismissed her appetite. Also she has been eating like this for around 6 weeks and not put any weight on if anything she looks thinner (she is being weighed tomorrow)

Anyone any suggestions please

I’d say perhaps another dose of worming tablets were needed?

Makinglists · 16/01/2018 20:12

You need to worm again then wash all her bedding, towels, cuddlies on a hot wash. Vacuume her room thoroughly and trim her fingernails. Also pants and night to stopping her itching in her sleep. The problem is that if you don’t get rid of the eggs she will reinfect herself. Not nice for parent or child - been there, got that tshirt☹️

Foreverhopeful22 · 16/01/2018 20:16

So you think it's worms by what I've said?

I'll get more tablets in morning and do it again.

My daughter get worms so often. We have the worm stuff and repeated it after 7 days (as per the instructions) I think it was called mebendazole
She gets a pain / stinging around her genitals and apparently that's a symptom of worms.
We also have to ensure regular nail cutting and the usual hot bedding wash including her teddies.

Apparently at night if u shine a bright light at the bottom you can sometimes see them creeping out (as the worms usually come out at night) I've never managed to see them but did see small tiny white spots which are the eggs.

I have to use the medication on a regular basis as it keeps returning. (I think every 3-5 months recently.

She also finds the moist toilet tissues soothing and they don't drag along the skin like dry toilet tissue.

Is she constipated. Are her stools a nice smooth sausage (sorry tmi there lol ) if she's struggling to poop or it's lumpy that may not be helping.

Hope she gets on okay and just take her back to the docs if you continue to be worried

You need to worm the whole family as well.

gamerchick · 16/01/2018 20:41

Did you treat the whole household, damp dust the house and treat everyone again after a couple of weeks?

If not, treat again and again in a fortnight.

Mrsjellybum · 16/01/2018 20:44

We re wormed after 2 weeks not one as I originally said.
And like the others have said worm the whole family. We did all 4 of us at the same time.
They are a nightmare aren't they x

Foreverhopeful22 · 16/01/2018 20:49

Her poo is not semi soft and sausage shaped (sorry)

Don't worry I'm going to worm us all this time.

I will rewash bedding and clothes again on a very hot wash

Maybe it is worms

To be honest I am really hoping it is as I can treat her if it's not then my doctor is useless !

Worms are horrible. We do the whole family with Ovex and a follow up two weeks later. Everyone has to wear clean pants to bed for the next two or more weeks. Bedding washed at 60, towels washed at 60, closest cuddlies in the freezer if it's midwinter and they can't be washed and hang outside. Agree re clipping fingernails. Scrub (gently!) fingers with nailbrush several times a day. Wash hands immediately if she scratches her bottom.

WetsTheVet · 16/01/2018 20:55

Are you sure that when she says itchy she means itchy and doesn't mean painful?

Mrsjellybum · 16/01/2018 20:58

Hope u get sorted OP x

MotherofaSurvivor · 16/01/2018 20:59

If it was worms, you'd see them in the poo! They'd be dangling out of her bum when she's complaining of itching.
It sounds to me like either she's not being wiped sufficiently or something she's eaten and ultimately pooing is reacting with her skin.

I recommend Eurax cream. Put on fairly generously around her bum hole. Don't rub it in, just leave it. May sting a little for a couple of seconds but will stop itching for 10 hours. Magic stuff

Almostthere15 · 16/01/2018 21:04

If you don't do the whole family it won't work. So I'd do that, hot wash the bedding, damp dust, don't share towels, good handwashing. I chucked out

You must repeat the dose too. I chucked out play doh as I read it was a spreader. Kind of gross.

If that doesn't work then push for more tests but I do think you need to give a good go to following the treatment plan

littlecabbage · 16/01/2018 21:14

Just need to correct PP - you will not see worms in poo, or dangling out her bottom when she is itchy, as the worms only emerge at night when child is sleeping.

The reason children scratch their bottom is that at night, the female worms lay eggs around the anus and genitals, and they do so in a mucus which irritates the skin and makes children scratch. It's a clever evolutionary tactic to ensure maximum spread of eggs to reinfect sufferer, and infect others. Nice!

SeamusMacDubh · 16/01/2018 22:46

When I first saw your thread I thought "need to wipe toddler's bum more thoroughly". I don't have any experience of worms and DC so can't offer any wisdom or advice but occasionally my DS will say his bum is itchy and it's usually due to either sweat or not been wiped properly.

BhajiAllTheWay · 17/01/2018 13:27

I'd say almost 100% worms. So contagious. Definately don't wait to see them " dangling out of her bum" to prove she has them!! They're tiny but cause immense discomfort, you may never actually spot them as the PP said they tend to be active at bedtime ( or after a poo) and emerge to deposit eggs. You can check for them and fish them out on tissue if you do see them ( tmi) depending on how receptive your daughter feels about you looking! Treat all the family, good hygiene practice and treat in 2 weeks again.
