Hope I’m posting this in the right place and I hope someone has some advice!

My Dd is 5 and a half months old and 2 days ago developed a high temperature, varying from 38.2 to 39.0 at its highest, although averaging around the 38.5 mark. I gave her lots of calpol, but it didn’t help in the slightest so I’ve stopped it now!

She has been sick a number of times in the past couple of days, she’s eating fine, she’s exhausted but she can’t seem to sleep and when she does it’s for no longer than about 20 mins. She also has quite heavy breathing and in the last hour has developed a mild chesty cough! She’s just not herself, she’s still a little playful but not as much as normal.

Had her at the doctors this morning and he checked for ear infection and listened to her chest etc, and just said keep an eye on her and if anything else develops bring her back! But I’m concerned why the temperature isn’t coming down? I haven’t managed to get it below 38.0?

She’s really pale too, should I be worried or just keep going and keep a close eye on her?

TIA x

Have you any infant ibuprofen? I have found that to be much more effective at keeping a temperature down.

Greensleeves · 12/01/2018 13:55

I would take her back to the doctor if her temp isn't coming down on the standard antipyretics.

Greensleeves · 12/01/2018 13:56

Have you tried stripping her off and sponging with cool water?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 12/01/2018 13:57

How do her hands and feet feel?

NuttyCasey · 12/01/2018 14:05

I haven’t got any ibuprofen but when OH is home from work I’ll send him out and give it a try!
I haven’t sponged her down, Ive heard it’s not advised anymore cause it can give them chills or something? That was what I thought about the temperature coming down too! I thought if it didn’t come down after 24 hours you were supposed to get them seen?
She has cool hands but she eats them a lot so could just be because they spend their days covered in dribble!! but her feet are quite cold too Confused

Thanks everyone for replying! Don’t feel so silly now!

Sponging down isn’t recommended anymore you’re right. It’s because it tricks the body into thinking it’s cooling down and so causes the body temperature to go even higher. If you cannot get her temperature down when using anti pyretics you need to get her seen again. Strip her off and make sure she’s drinking.

Why would you want to lower temp it is not the illness it is the body doing it's thing. Let her have a fever and it will pass...lots of fluids and skin to skin.
