3 Year Old Girl with UTI

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I hope someone can reassure me!

On Friday of this week, my DD had a good few accidents in her pants which she doesn’t do anymore. Saturday she seemed fine apart from being twice in quick succession while we were out for dinner, and being DESPERATE to go. Sunday morning she cried out in pain on the toilet. I stupidly flushed before I looked in the toilet but when I wiped her the wee was very dark.

I phoned for an appointment at the emergency doc straight away. The dipstick showed she had blood and leukocytes in her wee, so 3 days of antibiotics.

I’m pleased to say that about 4 hours after her first dose she had a painless pee. So i’m hoping that means they are working.

Last year I had an awful time myself with my first UTI that lasted 3 months, and I guess I’m a bit traumatised by it as I still have issues.

I’m really meticulous with toilet stuff. We did buy new Aldi pull up’s for bedtime recently (switched from Huggies) and I also bought her new body wash last week.

Could either of these be to blame? I just don’t want to believe that she is going to inherit this from me so young.

Also, is it common for children to have blood in their wee when they get an infection? It was so alarming and I’m worried it will happen again.

Thanks so much to anyone who answers!

My little girl (3) gets a lot of water infections that result in her being very unwell. Again I'm quite meticulous and it's definitely been better since potty training but is very common with girls.as a one off I wouldn't worry too much but if it continues push for a scan that's what we are going though at the moment.

i would ditch the new body wash but generally I don’t think you can prevent these things.

So sorry your DD gets them a lot, Jassmells! I can totally and utterly sympathise - they are horrible.

I hope everything goes well with her scan, thanks for replying!

Rainbowsandflowers, thank you, think I’ll do that.

Ladies have a google of a product called D mannose, many people swear by it as a preventative and it's suitable for all ages.
It works for my own daughter.

Thanks Helendee! I researched the hell out of it when I had my own horror of a UTI, it only works for those caused by e.coli, though, but I think for that it’s really effective.
