My daughter has been prescribed Chlorphenamine syrup (1mg bd) for urticaria but she really really struggles to take it because of the taste, she's never getting a full dose because of it.
Would I be ok to buy the tablets (I think you can only get 4mg tabs OTC) and a pill cutter and give her a quarter of a tablet twice a day instead?
She's 4 and weighs 21kg, no other conditions or meds.

I would ask the pharmacist, rather than asking on here, OP.

Owletterocks · 07/01/2018 21:47

I wouldn’t, the tablets are really small so it would be difficult to cut them accurately even with a tablet cutter.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 07/01/2018 21:48

But it's the release time with medications that's important - don't mess about and instead ask for professional advice.

Owletterocks · 07/01/2018 21:48

There are other anti histamines you could try though or even a different brand of chlorphenamine

DontFuckingSayIt · 07/01/2018 21:50

MyBrilliantDisguise the tablets aren't licensed for children under 6. But surely it's the same drug and I'm sure she's as big as some 6 year olds. I'll probably give the GP a ring but I might not have chance until Wednesday.

Down the hatch with some orange juice or her favourite drink afterwards.

123getwiththewicked · 07/01/2018 21:52

Can you put it in some yoghurt? I wouldn't use the tablets - as PP mentioned they're tiny and you don't want to give her too much.

DontFuckingSayIt · 07/01/2018 21:53

Sullaby that works with antibiotics etc but this we're really struggling with, it has a kind of minty taste so difficult to disguise! She just spits it out, she's getting frustrated with herself as well.

Would disguising a minty taste work better with a chocolate based drink? As the two flavours go better together? Annoyingly, there used to be a strawberry flavour version, from a different company, but several online companies are listing it as out of stock, so probably not available.

Agree you'd be better having a chat with the pharmacist.

Has she tried holding her nose as she takes it and then has a flavoured drink straight after before she lets go of her nose? My son doesn’t like the taste of one of the own brand paracetamol liquid but can take it if he holds his nose and has a drink straight after to wash the taste away.
