Ocular Migraine

My ds said to me he was seeing everything diagonally. It only lasted a short time but he seemed quite upset about it. He was fine after it. He then told me it had happened a few months ago at school. He told his teacher about it when it happened. The teacher said it was because he was working so hard.

My ds suffers from anxiety. He also has dyslexia, autism, asthma. Do you think it could be a visual migraine? Should ds see a doctor or do we wait and see if it happens again? His teacher never mentioned anything to me.

I have made an appointment at the opticians to talk to them about it. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you 😊

I had an ocular migraine for the first and so far only time in the summer. It was terrifying. I went to A&E as no idea what was happening! I did see an opthamologist at hospital a couple of weeks later who said no need to do anything unless happening often and then to see GP. Mine was coloured sparkly crystals gradually increasing across field of vision for 20 mins then stopped. No headache or other symptoms. Might be a good idea to take son to see doctor if it happens again just to ensure that us what it is. The opthamologist showed me pictures of typical effects and one was exactly what I saw. You can prob google these and show your son? Is he old enough to identify what he saw? Hope your son is ok

I would take him to see the doctor, or phone them and see if they'd prefer an optician to check his eyes out first and then see doc.

His teacher is very irresponsible not mentioning it. An important factor is whether your son can see the pattern when he closes his eyes. What you 'be described sounds like an OM.

Caffeine, hormones and stress bring mine on. They start with black/blind spots.

That sounds so scary IHaventStopped I hope it does not happen again to you. I will Google the patterns. My son is 9. He seems scared that it may happen again.

Grabby I was wondering if I was wrong to think the teacher should have said something to me about it. He is a newly qualified teacher. I will ask my son if he can remember if he saw a pattern when he closed his eyes. He doesn't like talking about it. All he would say was everything was diagonal so I am not even sure there was a pattern.

I will phone the doctor on Monday. Thank you to both of you for your advice.

I get these and yes, it is terrifying the first few times it happened (when I was younger my migraines were solely the more common headache ones).
When he says seeing diagonally, that could be a description of what I see....a part of my field of sight goes blank and instead I see sort of diagonal lights..a bit like a kaleidoscope when it's being turned.

Dexywexy · 05/01/2018 22:47

Thank you ITought it helps to know his description could mean it is a migraine. It sounds very scary to have something like that happen all of a sudden. My son is not good at telling me when he is ill or something scary is happening to him.

If you Google it there are lots of great pictures on Google images which perfectly represent what I see when I have one of these.

Dexywexy · 05/01/2018 23:15

Thank you Twig I have had a look at the pictures on Google. I will show them to Ds in the morning and see what he says.

We looked at the pictures on Google. He was not seeing any patterns. The pictures of wavy vision were similar to what he experienced.

It may not be a migraine but I think definitely a symptom of anxiety.

Thank you for all your help.
