DD seems so tired during antibiotics Augmentin

My DD is going through a tough time since Dec start. First she had cold and runny nose, fever once or twice but under 102F/39C. Following week she had some sort of infection on her tongue tip and her food quantity dropped drastically almost to 10 to 20% that too after much persuasion. We gave her Aloclair liquid to gargle. This helped a lot to cure the infection within 3 days. Her food quantity increased little bit. Her runny nose was still continuing but less.
But the following week, 3rd week, she got cold and fever again. Most of the time the temperature remain 101 to 102F/39C, couple of times it shot upto 40C too. She almost stopped taking food.
When we contacted the GP he suggested antibiotics(Amoxicillin) for 5 days. The temperature was regulated properly and didn't had fever. On the 3rd day on AB there was little improvement. She started taking food again, though little amount. The runny nose reduced too. We felt some sort of relaxation. Throughout all these illness she was very active like usual. but unfortunately just after the next day of completion of full course of AB, her runny nose increased, she experienced sudden temperature shoot ups. She was not active anymore. She seemed very tired, may be because of fever. When we contacted the GP again, the same doctor prescribed another antibiotics (Augmentin). Today is the 3rd day on new AB. She is still continuing Nurofen 4 times a day otherwise the temperature shoots up to 39+. She seems very tired all the time. Her food has reduced to Zero, really Zero. We are not able to convince her. Her runny nose has reduced a lot but not stopped completely. Usually she is very chatty but now a days she is hardly speaks a word. I bought few new toys for her but she didn't even looked at them.
We are really very concerned about-

  1. Her food
  2. Repeated illness
  3. So tired. Is it because of AB? She was quite active during her first AB.
  4. Temperature shoot ups

Can anyone please suggest something?

Thanks
Subha

Take her back to the drs - do you have a children’s hospital near you?

It could be the antibuotics aren’t working because it’s something viral like flu.

Stop giving neurofen so often - it’s a very strong medicine so use sparingly - if she’s still got a fever after so long then go back to drs. Calpol is ok to use for longer.

How is she today? Have you taken her back to a dr yet?

How old is she? I would put the tiredness down to a prolonged illness more than the antibiotics.
If she's taking fluids?? If she's very dehydrated and you can't get anything into her she'll need IV fluids

Dear readers I am sorry I couldn't respond earlier.
DD is feeling good today. Seems Nurofen was the problem. As @RainbowsAndFlowers78 mentioned I started giving Calpol from the same night. The next day she was little active.
I have one observation- when DD was taking Nurofen, she used to get fever after few hours (roughly 5hrs), during night too. But since DD started taking Calpol, the next day onwards she didn't have fever. We have not given Calpol to her today and she was active most of the time.
I would not suggest anyone to take Nurofen along with Augmentin.

DD was active today but she still showing zero interest for food and water. Somehow we have managed to convince her for juices and she is ok with it. Now our main focus is for food. It's been a very long time(more than a month) she has not taken a full meal.
Can someone please suggest how to encourage her for food?

Thanks all for your suggestions. Smile

How old is she? I’d let her eat whatever she wanted for now, even if it is rubbish. When my son was really poorly for a while all he wanted was kfc popcorn chicken so we just let him have it. Doctors don’t tend to worry about not eating as long as they’re drinking but a month does seem a long time. I’d definitely be asking medical advice. As for augmentin antibiotics, my son has had them a lot and never made him tired. Hope your daughter feels well soon.

She is 2yrs old.
As of now we have not observed any specific food she has shown interest for. Btw we have taken an appointment with a famous doctor on Tuesday.

Thanks

Just came across your post my dd was on amoxicillin early December for an ear infection, this didn’t clear. She was hen prescribed a 10 day dose of co-amoxiclav which is augmentin I believe. We gave my dd calpol and nurofen and on 25th dec she refused all foods saying she was no longer eating again.

We have only managed to increase my dd food to 3 items skips, mini Jaffa cakes (won’t touch standard size and Waitrose brioche. We have contacted a food therapy for help as we aren’t getting anywhere, my dd is 4 in March.

Please let me kow how you and your dd get on.

Now a days my DD has improved a lot. She makes roughly 70 to 80% of her overall meals. Though her sleep duration remains high. This I believe is good for her. She is not fully recovered and she must be feeling tired in times.

Do you still give Nurofen? As I mentioned in my previous post, Nurofen was not doing good for my DD. When I started Calpol, then only she started active.

Thanks
