Neocate

Please can someone help us - how on earth do I get my doctor to prescribe neocate for my 9 mth old? He’s suffered since birth with cmpa symptoms which 2 drs at my surgery and 1 at the hospital refuse to diagnose as cmpa. I’ve tried every milk and bottle going. They keep prescribing ranitidine and gaviscon despite them not working. I have such a poorly boy and me and my husband have had no sleep since he was born. We are truly at our wits end.
Someone was giving away a tin of neocate milk so we tried it and it transformed my child for a week. Sadly it costs £38 for 400g which we can’t afford. We currently pay £20 for 800g Nannycare formula which is goats milk. I’m sure ranitidine is being prescribed as it’s cheaper than neocate.
Can anyone advise how they were able to get neocate on prescription please?

Neocate is very expensive and is the gold standard of hypoallergenic milk. There are hypoallergenic formula milks that a GP would want to try before prescribing Neocate.

Reflux and CMPI often go hand in hand.

Have you been back with clear symptoms and asked for a prescription formula that they would be willing to try? What reason did they give of why they don't want to prescribe it?

You can also now buy formula that is cows milk free, Although you have to search for a stockist, some big Tesco's/hyper market size shops do them from the main brands - aptimal etc and they are similar price to normal formula. Google gave lots of options.

Keep a symptom diary for a few days and noting down when the pain seems worse.

My first child had nutrimegen (spelling?) and second still was allergic to that so had Neocate, third - more recent child GP was reluctant to prescribe but did as baby was dropping centiles and was clearly symptomatic and that was only on one bottle a day with BF the rest of the time.

Your HV may be able to help and they are more likely to prescribe if the baby is losing weight.

There are other ormilas to try first which are less broken down but still good for cmpa
Neocate is amino acid formula and really only used for severe issues

I think In my area GPS may no longer be allowed to prescribe special milks.

My son did get prescription milk - 1st Aptimil Pepti and the Neocate from Paeditrician.

Both completely unnecessary for him. If they had prescribed Carobel they would have saved themselves a fortune!!

But ask for a referral if you’ve not already got one.

Or have a breakdown in the surgery like I did (when chased up said referral) . We were having a particularly bad day and it all got too much.

Good Luck. I hope you get it resolved soon x

Hi,
I Went through the same rhing. My baby was struggling with milk too until We tried neocate lcp. He’s so much better now. I asked the GP so many times to prescribe it but they didn’t help. I gave up until a friend found me someone sells neocate for £20 each. Which’s a bargain!! if your baby still need it let me know so i give you their contact details
